Reflections on the Modern Music Community
IAC Friends & Colleagues,

Rule 11 is approaching the end of its second month of participation here at the Independent Artists Company. In that time, the Programming Department was gracious enough to program Rule 11's inaugural tune, "Shayne" on both the Hitline and Big 50 playlists for 5 days and 6 weeks respectively. I wish to extend my deep gratitude for their consideration, not merely for the considerable prestige, but primarily for the increased listener access that those positions provide. Sharing our work is, after all, the whole point of the exercise and as Shakespeare said, "The play's the thing." Thanks for facilitating the plays.

As some of Rule 11's budding network of associates here at IAC are already aware, I was also one of the principals of "Gaslight District", featuring the incomparable vocal, composition and station administration talents of Anjuli. In the wake of the de facto dissolution of Gaslight District, I was absent from IAC for quite some time. Having rejoined the ranks here under my new moniker, I have enjoyed resuming my associations with some of Gaslight District's supporters and with some new folks with whom I was previously unfamiliar. I have also noted that the close proximity of the audience and the emerging networks of like-minded artists produces some wonderful effects on one's work. I constantly look around in amazement at the dialog, collaborations and all manner of good things springing up around here like watching a repeating succession of waves crashing on the shore. Feedback is immediate and mutually beneficial relationships actualize in a fraction of the time that it took in the, "good old days" of the monster musical juggernauts. There is an awe-inspiring amount power here and like the ocean, much of it is unfocused or at best, barely harnessed.

Like many "scenes" throughout music history, this is an exciting time and place to be a working artist. In the U.S., after Seattle, everyone was taking bets on the next civic epicenter of musical and artistic innovation, well, we here at IAC and comparable sites have ended the suspense, we are the epicenter and it is everywhere. Like the sea, the tides of innovation continue to erode the death grip of the media conglomerates, pounding it down piece by piece, fractionating market segments into ever more specialized niche communities of almost tailor-made music. Artists may not be able to hope the same level of mass appeal as in bygone days, but they now gain the satisfaction of greater mutual resonance with their smaller core audiences. Best of all, we are still in the fledgling stages of this emerging artistic dynamic. The future beckons us forward and we are the first generations of the new past.

Thanks to all here for your continued efforts and making the world a richer place as we create the future of music together.

Best regards,

Steve Murdock

wow, you're the guy from Gaslight District ? I must be the last person in the loop. haha

Anyway this was a superb blog entry. I agree completely that we're just scraping the surface of what IAC ultimately can be. The scene grows with its own unique timing, the momentum of which sometimes seems to happen at night when the world is sleeping, Then you wake up and realize the whole realm has moved further down the path with another quiet leap. Sometimes the calm comes before the storm, and when you least expect it, a day emerges when all the colors and possibilities seem to stare you right in the face. Ever participate in a real tug-o-war, that feeling when people are all pulling in the same direction at the same time, when you realize the weight is moving your way? The world absolutely doesn't have a chance at withstanding our thrust when this glow, when this great indie force reaches critical mass.

What a wonderful outpouting Steve, I like your analogy of the power of the ocean, underlying currents, ripples becoming waves etc. And by the way, Scott is not the last person to find out who you are, no that must be me. I am returning to IAC today as Verity but I remember in a former incarnation, Gaslight was the first band to show me some encouragement at IAC - Thank you, and don't ever hold back that glow we all want to bask in it ... Of course I was teasing about the bands, in truth I don't have any 'stuff' I'm simply a Pipeline member and a big IAC fan. That's another nice thing about belonging to IAC. anyone can be part of the community without having to be a musician. If you like indie music you'll find the best arena around here - real first class 'stuff' You can see new talent ariving daily and become a fan by sending comments, (without having to wait for an e mail), share pics, info and music, messages, adding songs to your Stations - you can find fun threads to watch or contribute to - you can listen to KIAC you can tell people about yourself It's the only large music site around that combines music and sociality in a user friendly flexible way. Many people here have 'myspace' as an alternative venue but it can feel a little isolated there at times I find, somehow IAC has more 'heart' Hope you don't mind me using your threat as a soapbox Steve.
PS Eaglehead are a good example of a great band that share and support and great 'teasers' too - Verity K

Game, set and match....well played! Verity you are a truly a wild-card! This has been a test of the emergency "polite-acknowledgment-of-you-even-though-I-have-no-idea-who-you-are-or-what-you're-talking-about" anti-hurt feelings system. If this had been an actual attempt at mutual acknowledgment and gratitude, you would have been serviced with a successful, albeit ad hoc, Google search resulting in soothing reassurance that your works had not fallen upon deaf ears. This concludes this test of the emergency "polite-acknowledgment-of-you-even-though-I-have-no-idea-who-you-are-or-what-you're-talking-about" anti-hurt feelings system.
