ahhh you're a Calculating SOB....Lets throw a music blog smoke screen to fall back on later when people accuse you of being here for ulterior motives, slick and sleazy.......I think you have ventured over to the dark side and sought council from Rove. :)~

Freddie Mercury - for his presence, his stagecraft and his writing as well as his vocals!

Thats a no brainer its obviously Joe Cocker, no one else comes close.
As an aside Holo I do read your political posts, I dont post on them however as I believe politics is often as we say in Aus "a mugs game". Also I am not an American so I dont like to impose.
However democracy is important and to function it needs people to be actively involved like yourself, so please accept my encouragement and gratitude for your active participation in your democracy.

You want the other one I think

I have to go with Freddie too, he sounded good, he had a magnetic stage presence and he just Rocked from the inside out, plus he wrote, played on and arranged some amazing songs that stand out from the crowd and for the crowd.
I wouldn't include Lennon or Bowie as I prefer their softer arty Pop to their more aggressive Rock.
Jeff I really think this guy (Holo) can't win with you now unless he leaves the site, and I think that would be a loss to IAC in a way. This negative passion you're showing is starting to reflect badly on you which is a shame because I always enjoyed your posts and music until this discriminative tone entered. I think we all understand you don't like him now but don't really want to be faced with it at every opportunity.
Pardon me if I too am stepping over the mark here, I have your best interests and those of the Pipeline at heart really.

Has to be :
Chris De Burgh
Cliff Richard
Cliff Edge
Ricky Martin ... when he really rawks out
Bob Martins ... little known rawker who went on to develop worming tablets for pooches
House Martins ... that is the guy from the House Martins
Billy Ray Cyrus ... pre and post country phase
Billy Bob Bobbins .. yet but soon to be discovered once he's recovered
Eddie Van Tail Lift
Eddie Van Hire
The guy from Judas Priest ... just because he's one ugly Mudder Tucker and wears a Nazi cap ...well it looks like one to me anyway .... not into the imagery myself but you have to be a real RAWKER to wear one of those or alternatively just plain stupid and ugly ...
I love these list type things ...they always bring out the worst in me ...

Yes Jilly, you are stepping over the mark and you know it. This negative passion you refer too is all Holo brings with him besides the occasional lame topic like this one.

Who's the most transparent and fatuous blogger of all time???
The nominees are -
Holo

Holo, go back to your one-trick-pony Obama-thon, at least those have the mild stench of sincerity. This one just gives me the creeps!

I wasn't asking you Desperate Dan:),
I stepped up to the mark when I swore at your obsessive tube posts maybe but you didn't speak up then.
The Pipeline is my second home and many people like Jeff (and Holo) are my surrogate brothers and sisters, so I was hoping a friendly 'rein' may be in order.
I don't consider being a fan of anyone or anything to be a negative passion do you?
I guess you are calling this topic "lame" because it is not controversial or you don't have a strong opinion about it that would draw attention to yourself. The way to handle a perceived 'lame' topic is to do what the Great Indoors have done here perhaps.
You seem like an intelligent, articulate person so I don't understand why you have to spoil your credibility with this intolerant, single minded attitude.
Is this where I have to add :) or ;) ?

Great Indoors is the greatest something singer though ! Actually, I love his voice and especially his songs and productions, I thinks it's brilliant and spectacular work and I've seen them live and they own the stage it's magic ! But rock singer he ain't. You are melodicious however, Great Indoors guy.
I think this goes without saying, but I believe Brendan is attempting to lighten things up round here on this thread with a bit ... hmmm ... what was it called again ?... ahh yes ! ... Humour
I'm gonna give Holo the benefit of the doubt and play along too...
Everyone must know that it is Engelbert Humperdinck that is, in fact, the greatest rock singer of all time !

Freddie Mercury..........!!!

9/7/2008 6:42:40 AM
Jilly thanks for your nice comment- I am trying to be light hearted with the subject matter and don't actually think it's that lame ...I am more amused by the male need to list everything and so tend to take the gentle piss when one of these greatest this or that lists appear from time to time ... we men as you are probably only too aware are great at compiling the trivial lists of life but pretty shite in general when it comes to compiling the essential ones ... so bad in fact that i do not know what i speaketh of ! .....
On the "HOLO" front ... there seems to me to be a considerable amount of hostility and some of it quite rabid to the poor fellow on this site .... i have enjoyed his posts and disliked them with equal measure but glad that he's around and sharing his views ... even if i don't always agree with him ... so what if most of his posts are political ? .....but i'm sure he must be into the music here as there are plenty of other sites where you can choose to wallow only in the political mire ... it all seems to be getting very personal and it's almost as if the posse is being rounded up to drive him out of town ... well i'm standing up for "HOLO" and his right to blog about whatever he wants and i don't doubt his sincerity ... i've never been one for the lynch mob mentality ....
BTW ; is there nobody out there who agrees with me that Chris de Burgh has to be THE GREATEST RAWK SINGER OF ALL TIME ... is it me ? ... or have i been hearing it wrong for all these years ? ....
Brendan

I always though Robert Plant was great, thats right in my childhood though, we were blasting that stuff all through jr High.
David Bowie is so, so....so good.

I guess in my mind it's sort of 3 way tie.

You guys really sussed me out. Posting this thread was diabolical, designed to trick everyone into submitting to my secret agenda. It's actually subliminal and having read it, Jeff, Diver Dan and Kurt Kurtsy will be hearing the phrase "Holo is a music man" in their brains til I decide otherwise.
For the record, my answer to the question is either Lennon or Cobain though Bowie is my favorite artist.

I'll probably be booed off stage for this but Jim Morrison had an electric voice ...
but he was not the best rock singer of all-time ...
I have studied the list and find Joe Cocker should have been listed among the nominees ... and although the list I see is very impressive it does not include who I think is the Greatest rock singer of all time ... and I see no women nominated ?
Gracie Slick should be nominated as well .... but IMO the Greatest Rock Singer of All-time ... with out a shred of doubt ... is (drum roll) ......

Brendan..Have you forgotten the lead singer from Rush?
All the amazing vocalists that came thru in the nu-metal genre..Quorn,Papa Roach or my personal favourite-the astonishing Chad Kroeger from Nickleback?
Can your personal #1 Chris De Burgh hold a candle to him in knowing the true way of 'the rock'?
That guy would eat the mutherfukn Lady in Red alive..

Cool list! These guys are all awesome, ...maybe the deciding factor would be for what specific situation or type of rock, or band you wanted them for...
That said, here's my current top four, but ask me in five minutes, and it could be very different:
Lennon: A Monster on the stage, Great voice, Great writer, Great Imagination
Daltry: Great front man, great voice, could have done it anywhere.
Plant: Great voice, could have fit in very well in a lot of other places imho.
Jagger: Perfect for the Stones, Maybe the best front man ever, but Stones only.
Another thing, ...That guy they call "The King" seemed to be able to carry a tune, and connect with the crowd just a bit, and sold a record or two! hahaha
I'm pretty sure he's still in the guinness book of worlds records, not just for selling the most records, but for also have the widest range of any singer, ...i think it was like 3 and half octaves or something like that!!
Probably the most amazing talent in history, his talents, allowed him to pull off anything ...including operatic, his interests drew him in different directions, at different places, and his presence, popularity, and clout (a nice way of saying, he made enough people enough money that they were willing to indulge him) to do whatever he wanted... Its just that what he wanted wasnt good for him.
He would certainly be the most talented, the most groundbreaking, the most dynamic, the most versatile, the most successful, the most profitable, the most enduring, and would be the one to have the most impact on fashion, and history of anyone on that list,
...But, I don't know that he could have pulled off Bohemien Rhapsody, come up with a concept like Ziggy Stardust, or Tommy, or looked good in "Grunge" attire.
;-)

Jilly, you're funny.
See this is where you guys make me feel 12. Why is it always classic rock dudes? What about somebody recent, or from the 90's other than Kurt Cobain? What about saaay, and these are just some ideas... Bradley Nowells, or Devin Townsend, or even Chris Cornell... I'd even say Ken Andrews or Jon Wozniak because those two dudes have the coolest stoney rock voices ever IMO, but I'm willing to bet nobody here (on the pipeline, 'cept for maybe Phlegm) knows who those dudes are except for maybe Cornell. And don't look it up then be all "he's so and so", haha. Not fair. I'm not being a dick and criticizing, I'm merely trying to broaden the spectrum if you will. :)
While I'm on the subject, is there a metal crowd anywhere here at IAC?
