The living definition of being anti-artist
Don't know if you heard about the recent situation where the McCain campaign was using Heart's song Barracuda as a theme song for Sarah Palin. Ann and Nancy Wilson wrote them asking them to cease and desist using their song for this because they don't feel Palin in any way represents them and their song.
The McCain campaign refused to stop using the song. I find this utterly despicable.

This is not the first time McCain has done this .... I remember not long ago when the Gop was ordered to stop using songs from John Mellencamp, Jackson Browne and Boston as well ... It's all out there if you google it ...
They have no shame ... and consider music as free as long as they want to use it ...
They are currently facing lawsuits ... which by the way will be settled and paid for by the American taxpayer ...

I definitely do not agree ... this isn't using the song to dance with your lover to ... this is using the song to promote someone's agenda ... It's just like in advertising ... you, as the artist, or whoever you sold the publishing rights to, can say yes or no to whether your song is used to promote a product ...
You as an artist are not selfish by saying no ... It is your song ...
If I like your toys in your backyard does that mean I have a right to go play with them anytime I want ? ... Just because G.I. joe meant something special to me ? ... Nope

Its a great Sales tactic by the Wislson Sisters, most people heard it and that was that. Now that The Wilsons are bitching about it...people are seeking out the song, and many no doubt are buying it.
Its Hypocritical of them.. As Larry points out. Hypothetically,What if Palin is a Huge Heart Fan and has bought all their Albums, T shirts, and went to 20 concerts over the years. Because the Wilson's disagree with her politics, they should diss a fan and a customer? Popular music is etched in the fabric of society, it is a soundtrack to all our Lives. Heart has done well in the United States, many of their fans are no doubt Republicans. I don;t buy music based on the politics of the artist, and the artists should not diss those that have a different opinion.
They can come out and say they do not support Palin's Politics, but to bitch about their song being played in Prime time to Millions is pretty Pathetic. I know privately they are Loving it!

I don't buy that at statement at all .... Not Everyone is for Sale !
Your statements make no sense Jeff ...
To me, what you are saying is like saying if someone first made love in a Rambler then they have the right to go make love in ANYONE'S Rambler anytime they feel like it ... because they were loyal Rambler owners ...
If the GOP wants to use the songs then they should ask ... plain and simple

Thats how I know I love you Sam... We don't agree on anything ! :) Of course you miss my concept and are comparing it to a "physical" object....but whatever. Its a song that sold millions of copies..Also, you glossed by the question..do the Wilson Sisters want only democrtas to be fans? Should they tell all republicans to stay away from their concerts and CD'S? Well in essence thats what they did here, and its a slap in the face to all people who supported them, and happen to be republicans.
I am a realist, the Wilsons are loving it! They just got their song exposed to millions. Damn, we are not talking Nazis here its the fricken Republicans ease up! Also, can we get the whole story, perhaps they went through the correct Channels to use the song. Check with Ascap, BMI,Harry Fox

I still don't buy it .... If THEIR song is being used in a political manner ... then they have every right to say what their political views are (or are not) ... that has nothing to do with their fans ... They never said you have to believe in their views to buy their material ... this is not about Fans ... It's about HIGHER ups thinking they can do anything they want, any time they want and piss on the Artist or the public !
Like I said ... they have already been down this road with other Artist ... and they have thumbed their nose at them repeatedly ...
I have no knowledge of whether or not they went through "proper" channels on this one ... but I doubt it ... simply by the fact they they did not do so in ANY of the earlier cases ....
I know it would never happen, but if Hitler had paid me a million dollars to use my music, or if John McCain would offer me the same deal I'd tell him to go take a flyin' leap ...
It is unfair of you to presume anything about anyone you do not know ...
Like I said ... some people are NOT FOR SALE .....
BTW ... LOVE YOU TOO BRUTHA !!!!!!!!!!!!

"Well, if their song is being played at a rally, and the rally takes place at a venue that has blanket contracts with ASCAP and BMI that cover the licensing from live events, then the Wison sisters are just trying to get attention for their sagging carreers because they really can't do much about that kind of use. Now if the reps put out an ad that used their song, then the girls might have a say in ther matter. Perhaps the Wilson sisters need to attend a music publishing class."
Like I said ... I don't know if they followed proper channels ... but in the other cases, especially in the Case of either Jackson Brown or Mellencamp they did not ... they were using their music in ads that had no relationship to ASCAP or BMI ....
It all comes down to respect (or lack there of) if you like a song and want to use it ... then you should have the decency to ask permission ... Law or no Law ..

In the link supplied by Kevin, it states they did not have permission. If thats the case they should cease playing the song. However, a simple statement that Heart does not agree or support the views of Sarah Palin or the Republican party should be sufficient. Just because the song is played, it does not mean Heart supports them. I don't think The Beatles Support Charles Manson :"Helter Skelter and Piggies written in Blood"
This comment from the article is a little over the top.
"I think it's completely unfair to be so misrepresented," Nancy Wilson told the magazine Thursday night. "I feel completely fucked over."
Give me a break... the song was written about the Music industry fucking artists over, so it kind of fits. It's really not a compliment to Sarah Palin..
I still think secretly they are loving it (just my personal presumption Sam)
I would like to know the bump in Sales they have received...

Dirge was a strict vegetarian and strong supporter of animal rights and I would not let her music be used by someone who supports killing of very intelligent social animals as wolves and bears in an inhumane way and enjoys having dead stuffed animals in her living room.

sometimes it seems to me (and I am not the only one for sure) that everybody (incl. politicians or the advertising industry) just craves for music but ... that nobody is ready to respect or recognize those who are actually making it or to pay 'em for it... maybe they just don't understand what it's all about in the first place (i.e. feelings instead of $). Likewise, artists often don't understand the rather materialist part of human existance...

"fricken Republicans" = most excellent phraseology
Go, Ann and Nancy!
It's like this. If the fricken Republicans took a photo of your baby without your permission and held it up at their convention to illustrate, well, anything, and you can't stand the Republican platform (or anything else about them), then you'd likely be highly POed about it.
If your songs don't feel like your babies, you're missing something. The fricken Republicans were using the Wilsons' song to PROMOTE their candidate and thus their ideology - naughty, naughty (as usual).

Oh Please, they sold their Baby long ago... People need to Lighten up, Republicans are Americans too... . If anything, the "Hearts" are making the issue bigger and shining attention on themselves. Let any of my "Babies" out on the national stage, I would be proud as hell.
Again, just because it was played does not mean anything is endorsed, or it's a reflection on Ann and Nancy.... again I state, what if Palin is a huge Heart Fan? The song "Barracuda" is about the back stabbing soul sucking music industry...again I state, it is not a good reflection on Palin.
Damn, I can be friends with someone who has different beliefs, I guess the left cannot stomach anyone who is a Republican, or has different beliefs....Once again the Republicans are being made out to be Sub Human Evil people... Pathetic... Its just an old song that was sold on a commercial record long ago, take a deep breath and worry about something that really matters. Ann and Nancy are making out like holier then thou hypocrites. Its a song!!! and its reaching a new audience. Damn..

Forget the politics Jeff. It's not about politics. It's simply a matter of manners and RESPECT. You ASK the artist if you can use their works. You POLITELY ask. You don't just put that tune out there like pulling a breakfast cereal out of the pantry. Wake up dude! Your right wing fog is obscuring your vision!

I love how the conclusion reached is I am right wing, I have posted over and over ad nauseum (always wanted to use that word) that I am an independent , moderate, fiscal consevative. Liberal on social issues, conservative on fiscal issues. There is no right wing fog here, I am making an observation...an over the top reaction by a couple of artists who sold out long ago. (Please see mid eighties Love Ballads)
Anyway, to each his own..I still think its petty. I would be proud to have my songs played at Republican or Democratic conventions...I am not spiteful or hateful.
."Hell, when you invade a sovereign country on a whim:
Really now Kevin, whether ol Bushie was smart enough to fool everyone ..or not..It was hardly on a whim. There were United Nations resoloutions, security council votes, votes authorizing the war by the United States Congress. Last I checked there were more then just republicans sitting in both houses. You can argue the war was/is bullshit, but I would hardly call it a whim.

I have one Heart Album "DreamBoat Annie" its pretty sweet....
I found this on the internet...very interesting :)
"In an appearance on a Seattle talk show, song co-writer and lead guitarist Roger Fisher announced he was "thrilled" with the RNC's use of the song, because it both resulted in royalties for the band and gave them an opportunity to publicly point out that he, the Wilson sisters, and fellow bandmate Michael DeRosier are "staunch" supporters of Barack Obama.[6] DeRosier, lead drummer on the recording and song co-writer, also supports the use of the song by the RNC.[7] Even after the Wilsons expressed their desire that McCain stop using their song, the McCain campaign continued using it, noting that they were paying all licensing fees"

I saw that too about the Heart guitarist but still if 2 of the writers don't want the song used, they should respect that. Of course McCain is used to bullying everyone, he's anti-artist.
Did you all see that Sarah Palin is claiming the use of executive privelege to cover up 1100 Emails which are believed to be about Troopergate. So much for her wanting the truth out. Also McCain's people are up there trying to get in the way of that investigation too.

You have the right to feel that way about both candidates but Obama is not using Karl Rove hate tactics to divide the country like McCain is.
Palin doesn't have the right to abuse her power. It came out tonight that a judge warned her about some sort of harassment campaign against this trooper before she even was elected governor and the worst info is yet to come, she's withholding emails claiming executive privelege.
