Music and Art represent the good in us.
I have known quite a few artists (both visual and music) thru my work. A number of my closest friends are artists and writers. One of them who inspired this blog is about has had a difficult life. She is tormented by vices that keep coming back and our circle has tried everything to keep her on a path that is good for her. I noticed again recently that her eyes take on a different glare when she is talking about her songs. It's almost like in so many ways she has turned into a miserable person but then when she sings or even thinks about her work, the demons in her seem to all go away.

I had a boyfriend who is a songwriter and he was always concerned about people stealing his songs. I got mad at him one time and he said that his songs represent the best in him. This stayed with me so I thought I'd blog about it today.

Interesting thoughts - thanks! I guess most people are imperfect, so our songs are often way better than we are!

---creating stuff----Art or Music or Poetry etc is cathartic----it is healing

just watch those poor souls who NEVER create!

I really know what you mean Janey and your friend is lucky to have people watching out for her. I too had a boyfriend who had a mild paranoia about loosing the work he had created and it was such a waste because as a result very few people got to see how very talented he was. Art should be spread like flower seeds and allowed to bloom rampantly in the hope that it will implant itself on as many people as possible

good evening Janey,
yes I fully agree with that - songs mostly represent our brightest part. No wonder then that at times music seems to be the best way of communicating for a band, far from any materialistic, idealistic arguments...
This makes artists particularly vulnerable to the world outside, which is why it is important for the most sensitive of them (such as your close friend) to be kept on track by their true friends. Not by an entourage of profiteers.
Furthermore, it really makes sense for the artists to get their songs fully protected by copyright and royalty collecting societies (in Switzerland, we have the SUISA).
