computer problems anyone? HELP!
PROBLEM
My computer is SLOW browsing the internet...it's not bad in vsplanet or iacmusic, but if I go to myspace or youtube, it takes forever to get into my mail in myspace, or into anything, and takes at least 4 or 5 minutes for a video to play....
If I click on a link after googling, I seem to get directed to somewhere else, so I have to copy and paste the link into the address bar to get there. Sometimes I am directed to a web site called COW SURVEY with a picture of a cow in green pastures.
If I go to yousendit.com it is very slow if not impossible to download a file someone has sent me.
SYSTEMS I HAVE
I have HP computer 187 gig hard drive with Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. I have Verizon high speed internet service.
WHAT I HAVE DONE TO FIX IT SO FAR BUT IT HASN'T WORKED
I deleted large files in my computer thus freeing 40% of the space. I ran virus scan with McAfee. I ran Spy Sweeper to eliminate spies. I ran a Registry Utilities program to fix problems. None of these things solved the problem. I have one gig of RAM on this computer and always have and haven't had this problem before. Is there something using up my RAM that I don't know about? I think there is a program here that is redirecting me every time I browse the internet that takes up memory and slows down the functions because it happens with web sites that have lots of music files, pictures, and videos.
How can I fix this? It's very annoying....takes forever to watch a video...takes forever to get into myspace.

What browser do you use if Internet explorer try firefox. Have you tried the check disk function and defragging your Hard drive it,s in my computer right click your c drive then properties and select tools from the tabbed menu . Does sound as though your computer has been hijacked though try one of the online virus scanners.

If you're getting redirected, it's likely that you've picked up a trojan/virus. One thing to check is to look at your 'hosts' file. It's in windows/system32/drivers/etc . It should only have localhost, or maybe one or two sites related to your ISP. A lot of times this is the first thing a virus hits, so that you cannot get to an anti-virus site.
I strongly recommend AVG anti-virus. They have a free version that's as good as any of the paid ones, imho. You can get to it at free.grisoft.com . There's links touting the paid version but all you need is the free one to start. I think it's the best virus checker to clean a system and it also updates daily.
Where I work in my 'day job' as a systems admin, I regularly take the massively expensive virus protection that my employer bought off of infected machines to clean them with AVG.
The recommendation to use firefox was a good one too! If you're feeling adventurous you can try google chrome. It might help things also.
Good luck!!

Yep ...
Sly's got it.
It's a trojan, Beth. Your symptoms are classic.
Follow his directions. If that doesn't work, find someone who knows how to get deep into Windows and kill it. They're stubborn, so whomever you choose should confidently say, "I know how." If they aren't absolutely sure, don't let them try.
It involves going into safe mode, killing the service ... preventing it from rewriting by eliminating the prefetch in XP and finding the other programs that launch to protect and rejuvenate etc ...
... it's complicated ... so find someone who knows.
My hope is the free spyware will catch it. If not, the best I've found online for free is:
Kaspersky Online Scanner
The thing about the free version is that it will take forever ... so it's best left overnight. The other thing is that it won't automatically remove the bug for you, but it will tell you what files you have to delete to kill it (the "pay" program does that).
Once learned, write down the information explicitly, restart in safe mode ... and then eliminate the problem files in Windows where instructed.
If you're unsure about doing that ... again ... find someone who knows.
Best,
Kev-

I'm not much of a windows man, but all the above advice sounds good. Good luck with sorting it out.

You might want to run a Hijack This scan - you can get online help with that
here: http://www.whatthetech.com/hijackthis/
There are lots of geek forums who will go through a Hijack This log with you step by step and tell you what to remove, and how. It's best only to work with one at a time, however, and the Whatthetech guys seem quite useful.
Good luck!

Yep, you're infected. I highly recommend this thing:
AntiMalware
It's cleaned some very tough and resistant stuff out that others can't touch.
Use the freeware version, it's fine.

www.majorgeeks.com they have an awesome forum. Go to the Malware section. You do need to degunk your computer. Use CCleaner every day before you shut down and make sure to clean your registry every month. Also get Spybot Search and Destroy!
