House concerts?
It seems to be a growing thing here in Canada..........house concerts. You invite artists to play at your house, usual singles or duets, have guests over who pay money to see the artists. You serve punch or something. It's usually for a couple of hours. Anyone else hearing about this? deb

My friend Nigel went to one. (Nigel sings on "finally Cool" and "Wonder Woman".)

I don't think he was too impressed with the artist performing, but seemed to accept the idea as plausible. He's fairly tactful, and doesn't just blurt things out like I do, so I'm kinda guessing at his reaction -- "kinda different" with a slight smile. I didn't push it.

I'd rather go to someone's house to jam, to tell you the truth.

Well I'm in BC, but I just read about one on Victoria Island. I thought it was a clever idea. I know there is an annual 'project' the french CBC video tape over in Coquitlam...I couldn't quite get 3 french songs together to do it :-(

Nice intimate idea to bring your music to new people wanting to listen, I'd try it if the opportunity arose.

Every year I have about 200-300 people over to my spread for a triple kegger. I've done this for the past 7-8 years around the end of summer. But the venue is just my cover band. (I hold the record for people calling the cops to my house!)
There's a great concept going here to charge people.
Not to make money mind you..... but to pay for all the damages done to my house and yard (plus alcohol bills)

Our drummer works for the local budwieser distributor.
That's hella-cool cause he also sets up the "bud -girls" for our area.
(Oooops........Sorry Sam!)
It's the "Everclear" that we have to go to Nevada to get!

House gigs - Susan and I have performed at one (so far) recently here in the UK. It was great! You get an attentive audience who are there to listen to the music (as opposed to being there to get drunk at a bar) and the audience gets a close and intimate acoustic version of the songs! the audience each pay a little fee which goes to the artist with some going to the house-owner to cover the refreshments (in our case it was tea/coffee and cake!). After the gig, the artists and the audience mingle, talk about the music, and about life in general... we sold a bunch of CD's too! And we gave everyone a little printout with our web site address and IAC page url too.

All in all, I'd say that house-gigs are the way to go - no PA hassles, no noisy bars, an attentive audience who are there to listen - all good points in favour of the artist! We are looking to do a lot more of them!

I guess house "parties" are nothing new. Every year we play at a farm beside Frobisher SK. He charges $10 per head and typically a couple of hundred bikers & friends show up. But it's all outdoors.

But a house "concert" is more like Satch described. I'd go if invited, or play if asked. But I don't think I could host one. Charge people to come into my home??? I dunno...

The charge is not just for people to come into your home - it's for people to be able to experience good live music in your home - a subtle but important difference!

Yeah I know what you mean, Satch. And it's good -- I'd go.

I don't think I host one tho'

Maybe if I hosted it at your house................:-)

Sorry Deb ... I got caught up in the moment ... please feel free to delete me and my Bud girl ... :)

I don't have a house but your concept got me to thinking for a moment ....
I was pondering the idea of offering my services to play background music at Ladies Tupperware parties and such ... but then I remembered most of these gals are married and it might lead to good ol' Sammy gettin' shot !
Well it was a good thought for a minute anyway....

I've played at a couple and it is a very cool, intimate kind of setting.

A word of warning, though....the municipality took note and it opened up a whole can of worms.....operating a business without a license, income, taxes, permits, commercial use of a residential neighborhood....pretty much killed the whole thing.

Thanks for all of the posts everyone. I actually thought I'd like to try and host one sometime maybe in the nicer weather............not a band but a single. Belleville is full of artsy type people who prefer a more intimate setting and it might be fun.........deb

It is very common here in New Zealand especially on the "Folk " circuit--------usually $10 a head with accoustic music only-----no mikes or PAs----
Often it will be an overseas act passing through-- with a kiwi support act opening for them---
I've done a few myself (back in the day) and my son Leo is in high demand with his Didgereedoo----- usually make about $ 150 after expenses, (byo food and drink)
