how many stations is too many?
I have three, and that seems a lot to maintain. I know others that have 10, 20 and more power to them! I think I'll add a few more.
I try to maintain a theme, even if it's loose, on each station. The problem is, there's so much good music and so much diversity, that I really need to add some stations, to keep things in order. I'll think on that some and try to tackle it straight away!

I use 4 plus my own artist station..Anymore is not being responsible and really devaluing the goal. Make great stations..maintain them..promote them...listen to them and UPDATE them...If they need CPR...delete and update songs....MASS station creation is emphasizing no value in the indie station nation. Going click click click click click is not a station manager....finding top quality songs and showing them to the world is........No matter what your taste or preference EVEN if it means YOU are not on the stations you create!

I have 8 and although it takes a lot of time I enjoy it... I maintain each and every one of them on a regular basis... I try to keep them at 50 songs or less so those on dial-up can down load them without waiting all day ... I stay with a theme and EVERY ONE of the songs I have selected is there for a reason.. I don't just click.. I listen to all these stations on a regular basis... They ARE my radio.... I guess it's what you want to take the time for as to how many stations you should have.... I plan on having a few more.. not to impress anyone but because I enjoy it !!!

I agree 100% with "the Man" we have 8, all quite different, 1 in the top 50, and 5 in the top 100.
we do have a small problem , when our broadband runs out---(it's rationed here in NZ ) and our 5 gigs always runs out, near the end of the month, so we just chew our nails until we can start again!

Well...I have 5 stations with approx 100 songs per station...That's approx an 8-10 hour listen per station and that is plenty....I put HUNDREDS of hours (in fact 2 years not to mention graphics)into scouting talent, listening and then promoting. I cannot properly promote or take the time to listen to 5 and I am on here a LOT. To play these stations for other people and my friends on dial up.....they have no problem streaming 100 songs as compared to 50 so no problems here on that end. I make them for me but if everyone simply makes 10-20-30+ stations (IE McDONALDS DRIVE THROUGH) they simply will not get heard or attract the same listeners on a regular basis. If it is for you fine but I don't see the need for someone to have that many stations. Sorry...oversaturation kills a good thing. Just ask how many dead stations exist where someone clicked a few songs they found pleasing and then didn't ever come back to it. Trust me on this..I have brought many people to the site and they want quality stations that feature great original music and don't have time to sort through the 1000's that simply exist. I strongly recommend quality over quantity and to build a following for your hard work and tireless efforts to promote indie music.

Oh yeah...I only add what I like and do not add friends just because I have a top 10 station. It has to be what I am looking for!! A lot of people get offended but most times their songs go to one of my sister stations or they are simply not playing something I enjoy.

Hardly Lucky..... Whoooaaa... In no way was I saying that you are wrong or implying that you don't work very hard on your stations. In fact I believe you do... Quality is in the ear of the listener... I myself like the songs I have on my stations and I do listen to them ALL THE TIME ... just check the stats if you have a song on one of them ... and they don't all contain my own songs... This is not a contest ... sheeeesh .... I hope others like my stations and other people Are listening to them ... Whether it's 4 or 40 doesn't matter ... If you have 4 stations with 100 songs on them and I have 8 with 50 doesn't the math come out the same ?
I wish you and everyone else all the best in your music endeavors and your station endeavors also ... I would hope as a fellow Indie Artist you would do the same !

Wikked..... don't say that you yourself don't play the favor game at least a little bit... You have posted blogs asking for people's support such as in "Go Vote For Peeler" in that post you ask for support for someone who supports IAC.. nothing about listening to all the songs in the contest and vote for who is best.. I went there and will continue to do so as a favor to both you and Peeler because you asked and I will always try to support the fellow artist here on IAC ... as for Stations I recently started my eigth Station a tribute station to my best friend that died... I put one of your songs on it a few days ago... not because you are my buddy either.. I like your stuff, but it never fit any of my station themes... until the MOST important Station that I have built came to me... So am I wrong ?

well there's all kinds of stations, some are put up there for personal listening only, even. So no need for anybody to be unhappy with anybody else's stations. I know some people get offended when they're not thanked and so on but a station is defined by the person who starts it, there aren't any hard and fast rules. Except to enjoy what you're doing.

No....You're missing the point....I meant everyone does work hard but there has to be a limit or they become too common and serve no purpose..I believe they are gifts and most people are responsible with them and put what they like on their stations. I don't play favorites and I support PEELER because he not only earned my respect but won the Golden K for the song we are voting for. He became my friend after he was added...he was not added because he was my friend...See the difference? You also have the link and can vote for whoever you want....best song or not.... I'm sure Craig wouldn't want to win if he didn't deserve it...
As for stations....have fun and create away...I just think we need to keep them to a reasonable amount and of the great quality we bring to the table. I was in no way suggesting your stations were not quality.

Actually I now have 4. I discovered I had started another one. It only has one song on it, but soon will have more. 4 I think I can manage.
It could be argued that you need that many because of both the depth of quality material here, and great (and wonderful) diversity!

I hav eno input of value I don't think. I do hope to gain some insight from others posting on this thread while Im here though! I built my radio stations for my own enjoyment. I had no clue that the stations were even charted by popularity until my first one ended up on the front page of radio stations. Even once I discovered that mine was so well ranked, I was suprised and flattered but it was not what motivated me. Having something unique and beautiful that I enjoy and could share with other people is what was my motivation. I gradually created 3 more stations in other themes to enjoy for myself after I figured out you were not limited to only one. One day, once again, I found 3 of my 4 stations on the front page of station listings. I really have no clue what to advise anyone how to get there. It's a royal mystery to me how mine made it. . . I just recently added 2 new stations which will only be temporary and then taken off line once the special events are over. There is no way I could realistically maintain 6 stations the way I would want to, but I would never tell someone else a number how many is too many to have. I think what ever you can manage is enough.

Woh,i've got 20 stations altogether-All with comments..Its just naturally built up to that many thru adding/listening to alot of music here.
A few are fixed,so i don't have to update them-but the main ones-which are generally themed,i do..
I'd never add someone's song just 'cos they're friends here-If i don't wanna put it on thru merit..
I think thats insulting any potential listeners who might come to your station and diluting the quality of the music..
I love putting the comments up-which is like giving something back to the band/artist for making something great..
I know how much i like getting comments.
I used to think no-one listened at all to my stations other than me-but i can see from my stats that a few people do-which is brilliant..
I'd love to have more power to influence 'cos i believe passionately in the music i love..and want to see it given a wider audience
Everyone wants to be a frikkin' tastemaker tho lol

I have 3 stations and that is more than enough for me. I have no idea how that station thing works or what makes a station a success. My Soul Retrieval station has been all over the map, top to bottom. I can't make sense of it. I never change how I run it yet it moves up and down the charts randomly. I don't know how to promote a station. How does one promote a station? I just collect good music that appeals to me or music that is consistant with the theme of the station and I play the stations throughout my work station, house, workplace or wherever......etc. I can't even imagine having 6 or 7 or up to 20 stations. Wouldn't that be like a full time job? For me that would be biting off way more than I can chew. I get busy with Soul Retrieval 1 and 2 and Honey Bear station gets neglected! I've posted several times trying to understand the station thing. deb

One idea is, you put your own song after some particularly atrocious tune, making yours sound like the next Hey Jude in comparison. Of course the listener might never get there. A bigger extreme would be to fill a station with annoying tracks and stick your great masterpiece in the middle. :~DD
I once started a station at another site featuring 4 female artists I slept with. I would move her song to the top if I was particularly hot for one of these ladies on that given week. One time I was leaving my apartment only to get slapped in the face by the artist whose song ended on the bottom that day. I could only reply "but your song sucks!"
It was particularly mean-spirited, the person who started a station for one artist called ____'s Greatest Hits, with no songs on it. Artists can be cruel to their peers.
If you're gonna put a song on your station you don't like, holy mackeral, at least make sure it has a sexy picture.
PS I guess I better add this: The above jokes are meant to be a blog comedy routine so don't take me seriously, even if you don't find me funny. yowzah?

At IAC we leave that up to the station manager. It affords a certain amount of privacy to be able to have a station and not be subjected to pressure to add a certain artist or song because the artist knows who isn't doing so. Many artists choose to completely separate their work from their tastebuds. Of course many others choose to be completely upfront about this anyway but here, that's their prerogative.

There are a lot of possibilities and configurations, to serve varied purposes, just like the IAC in general, which is the most pro-diversity site I've seen. Thanks IAC!
Someone mentioned wanting to know who owns various stations. Right now I guess you would have to enter something in the de_scription which says who it is. Just a thought for a new station feature would be to have this shown automatically, but with the option of the owner to not show it - remain anonymous.

I want to thank all the station managers who have added my music to their stations. I'm proud of the fact that my songs are deemed worthy of being played on more than 150 stations. I especially enjoy when managers take the time to write a little review of the song. Just being added to a station is always a thrill but when there's a nice comment attached to the song - it's the icing on the cake. (it's also very informative when you know why your song is being selected.)
Edit - I ALWAYS thank station managers in their shout boxes immediately after learning a song has been added. I feel that's the least I can do to show my appreciation. Sometimes I go to a station where I was added and I find many other songs there but not one "thank you" in the shout box. That surprises me.

Helps make my day when i find a song I really, really like.
I have about 20 stations, about 15 in the Top 300. I keep em under 40 songs/station naturally.
Often a song I really like inspires a new station theme.
Today I found a song called "The Silver Cloud," from Italy. The music's cool and the lyrics are kinda wild and crazy. It's on my "Mr. Moonlight" station...
Greetings all, esp. Silverdood and Sammy...
