Have just put up a song which is a mixture of genres, country, soul/gospel and trad country. It was written as part of a film _script, and is meant to demonstate that musicians, from whereever, have a unique way of mixing with others and appreciate musicianship, whatever the form or genre. At the risk of self promotion, please drop by and have a listen, and leave a comment, in terms of "yeah it works" or nope, "no way, it sounds like a tandoori pizza"

Funniest thing I ever saw was in Sri lanka, at a hotel, where the travelling entertainment was a Sri Lanken band, dressed as Mexicans, playing Hawaiiin songs. And they pulled it off. We later went to the lobby bar, and all played the blues till all hours of the morning. It just showed me the universal appeal of music, and the common ground. It was a great night.

It was absolutely awful, I've never heard such a terrible mishmash in my life, it was like standing in the rehearsal room corridor wearing headphones as a Gospel choir parades down the street outside....hehe, gotya. ;) ;) You can do no wrong my friend. Loved the fiddle in the middle

No.
It can't be done.
Don't try it.

No excuse me, while I go to record my country 2-step/klezmer/punk/polka instrumental.

Two Silo Complex

Yes it can be done
Bands who do it:

Dream Theater
System of a Down
Led Zepplin

Many bands pull parts of genres together but the above bands do it well in my opinion.

Yeah - my boy would go along with that lineup!!!

Talk about mixing genres...................................

Me - Guitar & Vocals (1960's to Sex Pistols)
Drums - AC/DC to swing
Guitar II - Hendrix to Muse and all in between
Bass - Funky Chilli Pepper and Life in general

And Yeah! a bit of Little Feat groove just to make it move!!!

You're right there, some bands just do it seamlessly, without gimmickry, and it all just seems to flow effortlessly. Some things work and some thing don't. I reckon it's weeding out the things that don't which makes it happen.
