So, my experiment is working
Hello, fellow travellers - a couple of weeks back, I created the Monkey68 Random Station as a pure experiment. What I wanted to do was assemble songs simply based upon stumbling across them without listening first.
So, over the past couple of weeks, whenever I've come across featured artists, artists commenting on others work, bloggers, I've gone straight to their profile and picked songs at random from whatever I find.
I wrote this to describe the spirit of the station: "Here is the sound of no judgment filters - no taste, no opinion"
Yesterday, I treated myself to a full listen of the whole playlist front to back. And, yes, it was the first time I'd listened to any of the tracks. The experiment worked! I found myself listening to all manner of genres, styles, talents, inflections and, above all else solid quality music. As a taster of what's out here on IAC, it really works quite well. What was also interesting was a couple of more avant garde, off-track pieces that snuck in - this wasn't just music by numbers or formulae.
I'm going to continue to add songs to the station (without listening first) and periodically have a full listen.
Enjoy,
Vince (Monkey68)
ps: thanks for those of you who have come back with comment on my most recent songs (Corrigé, Hanute, Grind) I'm glad you're enjoying them and, yes, do reassure you that normal Monkey68 service is in the works!

Hi Monkey68, It's true and you've proved it, even picking a collection of songs randomly at IAC will result in an excellent listen because the stardards are so high and we rarely get anything that the broadminded, generous music lover wouldn't be able to enjoy at some time and in some mood. All you need to do now is arrange them to compliment the stream and perhaps add a little comment after you've listened to let us know what sort of song to expect :) Vee

A brave experiment but you will have applied some judgements even if unconsciously - The image, the title, for example.
It's risky - Unfortunately, as on all sites, there is some total crap as well as excellent music out there.

Interesting. Another angle on making a station.

Thank you Monkey68 for putting FUJI MINX'S, BUT NO NO NO, on your experiment station. But how did you not hear it first? I believe you didn't. But
it's sad to think if your lucky like we have been to get a song at number one (ALL GENRES) for about 14 to 15 weeks straight. Everyone at I.A.C. would have heard it. But I guess that is not the case. Your experiment has taught me something. I made an assume out of myself.

Vince ... I applaude your station Idea ... Taking songs at random is what I think makes this a great site ... There are so many great songs here, by so many great artist ... this is so much better than the radio ever thought of being ...
A lot of people on here know me as the "campfire" singer ... well, you randomly picked "Don't Mind Me" from my list of songs and it is about as far from the "Camp fire" as one can get ... I'm pleased you liked the song and really thrilled that someone got to hear something a little different from me ... I don't mind the campfire comparison's but I write in all different manners ... someday I hope to have the funds to get better equipment so I can record my other works ... but for now it's mostly me and my guitar ... thanks for opening your mind as well as your ears...

For what it's worth, I also go into bookshops and buy fiction based on not reading the dust jacket. If the title is interesting, I'll give it a go. Doesn't always work out, but some of the pearls I've found through taking such an approach are amazing.
From my Random station, I've just bought the CD by The World Record - it's great, a really lucky find!

John - I truly didn't listen to any of the songs I placed on my Random station (except Oowhee, which I picked with a dart from my own listings). I think the fact that I hadn't come across you guys is down to my simply not paying attention to any charts anywhere - I just generally start from wherever I am and then move forward. I don't think I've looked at a single chart in IAC!!!
Liking the Garbage meets No Doubt of But No No No - that's a bombastic riff for the verse, you guys carry it off well!

Like I said before Vince. I believe you hadn't heard the song. But here at the FUJI MINX camp. We got introduced to I.A.C. via the charts. So we might have an eye on them more then some. By the way thanks for your positive comments on the song itself. Even number ones need a nice stroke now and again.
peace.

yeah its interesting how each person comes across the different music. I go to the charts as well first and go from there. Or sometimes just click on a funny name...
