Did anyone else's play count just get cut by two-thirds?
All of mine did - either the server has been wrong all along, or I'm not as popular as I thought I was - damn, I'll have to write a song about it if it's the latter... Never mind, The Smiths already did:
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour, but heaven knows I'm miserable now...

Vince.... what happens is we started a new month .... even though the charts still say Nov.-Dec. ... November plays have actually dropped off as far as the charts go ... now it is the December and January plays that count..
This way is a good way I think to set the charts... it's sort of like the top 40 in the old days .... if it never changed the Beatles would still hold the top 6 to 10 spots ... (which wouldn't be a bad thing) but I guess would hardly be fair .. :)

I believe the reason plays dropped is because we are now charging to download them. If your on the top 40 or 50 your still alright. As for me I get most of my plays from outside of IAC and have seen a very drastic drop since I began requesting a fee for downloading. To date, I haven't made a dime off my songs and am thinking of going back to just letting anyone have them without the fee! I think if I do this my plays will go back up a month. I haven't received any money for my songs anyway! I'm starting to wonder, am I the only one on IAC, still getting several thousand plays a month and not receiving anything? I'm starting to wonder? What's up with that? WJU

Don't feel bad, I've been here around two years and haven't sold anything on this site either! But then, I don't care if I do or not. I sell enough of my CD's at the local gigs to pay for the materials to make 'em. If everyone here enjoys my tunes, I'm happy! I figure I'll make my money selling my songs to the right people someday.

William, just wanted to let you know you can have songs available for streaming and download sales at the same time.
By the way, this is a question that comes up a lot - why am I not selling downloads with this many plays? My response is usually "Do you personally buy a lot of downloads yourself? Or do you only listen?" The 4 or 5 times I've responded with that, the person on the other end didn't answer.

Back in the mp3.com days, there was a rather large cult of artists who would stay up super late to check the new stats. This was particularly fun if you happened to be me and had numerous tunes debut at #1. :) However, while it's of course mandatory to check out the action when you have a new song out, you can burn out on this results fixation. I personally have checked my stats about once a year since IAC began. I actually know people who gave up music because they couldn't handle the stat thing, they graded themselves based on it and became manic-depressive bipolar chart junkies whose psyches were only one lousy stat day away from turning on their best friend and threatening physical violence. heh Charts and stats are fun but it's just plain not healthy to rely on your daily dose for some kind of adrenaline pumpah. Not saying anyone here is that extreme but if I see anybody getting that way I may give you a virtual whack upside the head, somebody's gotta do it and who better than an internet chart legend. :)
I don't usually talk about this stuff here but since it came up several times on the pipeline today, I decided to upload my first ever online #1 song, that was an exciting day for me, was in early 2001. The song itself, well, is about a old high school friend who later killed himself. I haven't made it available for probably 5 years now, cause it's a sad story. It's called The Carefree Kid. Click on the pic to hear it.
