The most over-rated song of all time?
Thanks to Steve Ison, who kicked off a discussion on an earlier thread with the following question:
Freebird..The most overrated song of all time?
I thought I'd start up a thread to find the most over-rated song of all time. To try and be a bit scientific about it, let's try some categories (and I'll use an example):
The most over-rated song of all time is Billie Jean, because:
1) Lyrics - ok, the kid's not your son, sort it out in court not on the t.v.
2) Music - routine.
3) Performance - MJ's last hurrah - his singing was already being overshadowed by Yips and Eees
4) Other - the video (and especially MJ's performance at the Motown 25th(?) celebration) took focus away from how run of the mill this song actually is.
5) Redeeming features - the main beat, first thing you hear, is still energizing as it's ever been
OK, have at it.

ah but Billie Jean isn't overrated, because it's actually an intriguing song. If you listen closely you will hear that he's actually singing "the chair is not my son", and in one verse he sings "the cheddar's not my son". It's thought-provoking, dammit.
Most overrated song ? When I'm 64. Or Eruption by Van Halen.

I motion to disqualify Eruption on the grounds that it isn't technically a song.
Whatever Eruption is, it's still overrated, but it's certainly not a song.
My vote for most overrated song? I'm glad you asked: take your pick of anything in the Dave Mathews Band catalog or anything released by Ani Difranco since she quit being angry.
Love always,
Gremislav

Isle of Ewe, those crazy techniques you speak of just aren't musical. Eddie has no real ear to speak of, that kind of crap is only good for watching yourself play in the mirror. Personally I believe if he hadn't met David Lee Roth who has a fair amount of charisma, nobody would've ever heard of Eddie and his dumb noodling.
I also agree that Dave Matthews should be in the overrates Hall of Fame along with Madonna, those 2 should be the charter members. :) However there are a lot of current acts that need to be out of the sport for 5 years to qualify. heh

Stairway To Heaven. Waaaay over rated. It's become like the Mona Lisa of classic rock but I remember thinking at the time it came out: "Lazy, lame lyrics that don't mean anything" and bombastic show off-y guitar licks." It didn't hang together then, it doesn't stand the test of time now. There is crazy-great and bluesy Zep, but STH ain't it.
Oh and "Brown Eyed Girl" by Van the Man. What is with that? Catchy little pop tune in its day, but why not play anything off of Astral Weeks instead when you're a radio programmer looking for something from Van's vast and wonderful catalog?

Brown Eyed Girl on the other hand is brilliant..
Pure Liquid Joy..
How many songs have been written that are that naturally joyful?

I always thought Moon Dance was the good one and Astral Weeks was the average one.

"ANYTHING by the boss. WAY over-rated!"
There was a time where I would have agreed with you, Lar.
But you canNOT overstate the awesomness of the whole Born To Run album. It is seriously one amazing song after another. They may have been played to death, but give it a couple of years' rest. I did, and then it kicked my ass all over again.
My vote for most overrated song:
...I don't really know yet. Every song has something that I can take away from it. Even if it sucks.
(Not a fan of Dave Matthews though, so I guess I would lean toward that camp.)
