Once - A must see for anyone who feels music in their bones
Well, GLW and I watched the oscars t'other week - mainly because Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) was hosting and we're big fans - but also because it's always interesting seeing the films that have been nominated and that win, mainly because so many of them we haven't seen.
One of the high points of the oscars was the performance by Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who sang "Falling Slowly" from the low-budget independent film, "Once". A simple song on acoustic and piano, just the right side of stereotypical folk and a breath of fresh air compared to the been-there-done-that Broadway-esque tunes from "Enchanted" (though the gospel performance from "August Rush" was amazing).
When Hansard and Irglová won the oscar his adrenalised celebration couldn't have been better, even though she didn't get to say a word (until Jon Stewart brought her back on after the break - truly a wonderful oscar moment).
So, a couple of weeks pass and GLW and I were both tired last night after a long day playing with E&K - looking for a movie on the On Demand channel and there was "Once" - the only other choice was "28 Weeks Later" and neither of us felt in the mood for that, so we settled down to "Once".
I won't review the movie here, however I strongly recommend everyone sees this movie at least once, even those among us who have the most jaded of hearts. A simple, easy, honest movie, celebrating the connection that music brings and the open warmth of sharing in its joy. A movie that will leave you melancholy, happy, uplifted and satisfied. See it. Now.
