New Song: You Say
Not much to write about this song - it's about as simple as I get. All feedback much appreciated.

You're right, very simple. But very good. I like the faint fills of instruments you added in the background where needed. Nice touch, it made a lot of difference.

Thanks, Duane, for listening and your comments - I was aiming for as stripped back as I dared (it's such an honest lyric)

Very pretty song. Your voice has a shaky quality that reminds me a little of Neil Young. Like the tone of your electric. I think this song would work fine with just an acoustic and voice. We don't hear enough of that anymore. Everything is so overproduced these days.

Thanks much, Tom - the shake comes out when I sing quietly (as on this) and it's an honour to be in even the same ballpark as Neil Young. Electric is my Les Paul/AC30 dialled way back and toned down. More coming soon.

I agree with the above listeners. There's an honesty here that draws you in. It's often harder to put something out there that's simple and stripped down raw. Good sound on the acoustic too. One mic, two?

Thanks everyone, this one is exposed for me - so I'm really pleased it's hitting home.
The acoustic is a Fishman blend (piezo and soundhole mic) on my Martin HD28 and then an Electrovoice EV20 pointed directly at the soundhole as I played. There are, I think, 7 takes, with 1 mixed high and the others way down on the faders, giving some body without too much chorus. This same approach with the vocals and lead guitar. All of that based on listening carefully to Elliott Smith and Jack Johnson.
Thanks for the feedback, you have my love.

As time goes on, I become more and more fascinated by Elliott Smith's work, both from an artistic point of view and also the recording techniques - I'm growing convinced that he's going to be up there among the greats (if he isn't already) as folk look back in future years.

Muchas gracias - just MonkeyMe on this one! We've now found our replacement drummer, so the wider MonkeyMob will be out and about in a few weeks' time, when we've got enough songs together.
