Glastonbury Festival 2008
Glastonbury festival this weekend in the UK. Controversy this year over Jay-Z having top spot. Doubtful whether Amy Winehouse will appear as she has emphysema from smoking too much crack cocaine. I don't know if the BBC will give USA access to this website and the webcam but if it does .....ENJOY

Interesting, isn't it, that for the first time in it's history the festival did not sell out?

Amy did such an amazing set, one of the best she has ever done, singing straight from her heart. You must watch this

Do you know anything cool like that coming in London or nearby around AUGUST? That's when Princezzz and I are gonna be there for a visit.
Shit if it's cool enough I'll try and convince her to ensure we hit the place a festival is at, at some point during our whirlwind week of vacation. -Phlegm

24th August - Susan Raven, performing live at the Tenby Folk Festival, Devalence Theatre, Tenby, Pembrokeshire. Great venue for Susan - it's a beautiful theatre with a great acoustic!
As for Amy Winehouse, I just don't get what all the fuss is about - she doesn't articulate, just mumbles incoherently, extremely stylised vocal style which is really bland, her music is truly lowest common denominator... imo it's all a load of major label hype and smokescreen... take away that fabulous band and what's left? Oh, and she seems to get some kind of sympathy vote from a lot of people that I don't buy into either!

Satch, I don't know why you think Amy does not have a good voice, her voice is very unique and stands alone without even the need of a backing band. She writes all her own songs and she expresses all her feelings and emotions in her songs in the same way the great singers Billie Holiday and Nina Simone did and what Squrly Murly set out to do with her singing. If you listen to her first album 'Frank' which has much more of a jazzy sound than the more commercialised 'Back to Black'. Her backing band are excellent, anyone who can play saxophone like those musicians certainly earns my respect. She was discovered for her raw talent before she was signed by her record company. She uses her voice like an instrument in the same way DirgeK did and they become so overcome by soul when singing that the lyrics are not always clear.
I know she has become very hooked on the drugs, but it is extremely difficult to quit once you have become addicted. I watched a programme about a mother who was trying to help her daughter going cold turkey on heroin and she was still having severe withdrawel symptoms 6 months later and not getting much help from anyone. Amy may have been weak in the first place not to refuse the drugs but it is more the fault of those people who introduced her to the drugs in the first place.
I myself like folk music but for me it does not produce the emotion that a soulful singer like Amy does when you listen to it.

Hi all
DKs Mum
keep an eye out for a friend of ours "Katus" she does the festivals in the UK and tours, down here in the summer----she does have a site here on iac but is a great "live" performer, with JB her percussionist.
I'll keep out of the Amy debate!!!!!

Hey DK's Mum, I guess taste is a personal thing... I just find her vocal style really bad, unintelligible and over-affected, can't hear what she is saying. Her songs are pretty weak too. And while I agree that the band behind her is great and does a great job of supporting her, sometimes literally, that's only because her record label pays for them to be there, if she lost her label support, do you really think that all those fabulous musicians would stick with her??? And I have no sympathy for her on the basis that she slipped into drugs, because she has more chance than most people to make a great life for herself, a caring family, money, support... but what does she choose?
Now Neil Diamond, as schmaltzy as he is, great songs, great band too, every word perfectly clear. And the Verve were excellent too, I got every word he sang and they made a great din for a four-man line-up!

I enjoyed Neil Diamond's set also and Eddy Grant's but they can't sing like they used to be able to and nothing like Amy !
