Have you ever discovered a "ghost sound" in one of your recordings?
[Note: This is not a trick just to get you to listen to the song]

A couple days after finishing one of our songs (Transcendence) I was listening with headphones and noticed a strange "whirr". I backed it up and listened again and realized it sounds exactly like the sound a dove makes when it flies away. Sort of a warbly whistle. I couldn't think of anything we were doing that could have made that sound during recording. I haven't checked the multi-track yet because I keep forgetting to when I have access to it, but I had Dr. Dust (our drummer and owner of most of the equipment) solo some tracks to try and isolate it. He was unable to find it. Now I wait for it every time I hear the song. Since the song has to do with death, the sound of a dove flying away is just way too fitting. And the moment it happens couldn't have been better if it was planned.

Transcendence

The sound appears at 2:21 (so you don't have to listen to the whole thing).

Anyone else ever have something like that happen?

Stegor- I hear something like that at 2:16 which is pretty obvious so you probably know what it is but at 2:21 I believe I'm hearing the tuning wires that stretch along the bottom side of the snare skin vibrating from the loud sound of the guitars. It could also be the residual decay of the cymabl crash. If I gave it more time I could probably tell you exactly what it is. (I drive engineers crazy because I'm VERY good at hearing "ghost" sounds.) Of course, Isolating and soloing all the tracks is the only way to really know but if there's a lot of leakage it could be tricky. It's a cool song!

Oh yeah, I've had the odd 'ghost sound' crop up on occasion. Usually it turns out to be a convergence of a couple of different sounds that create a harmonic or just a strange noise that's 'on time', but not actually played. I always look on those as happy accidents that make the recording 'special' (or touched, like my Ma used to say). They don't ever tend to be anything that would draw a lot of attention from the average listener, but I treasure them.

Unless they clash with the tune, of course, and then I try to reduce the effect.

That's cool Stegor. I'm sure I thought that was intended when I first heard it. I love those so called accidents which occur from the creative process, especially when seen through time and perspective. Kind of like an epiphany when the fabric of life and how you see it, or saw it at the time blends and meshes, making more sense to you than the original moment perhaps. That in itself helps drive the desire to keep creating I think.

i've tried EVP recording a few times, sadly with zero results. it's a weird phenomenon for sure.

Electronic Voice Phenomena eh? You made me go look it up. You've actually tried that?

Richard - our mp3 player scrubbers must be off because I don't hear anything at 2:16. But it's really cool that you took the time to dig into it. Now I'm going to have to get into the tracks and isolate it because it's driving me crazy.

Like srm said - accidents sometimes add a lot to the music. How many songs have a silly little moment that you wait for every time you hear it? Like the little squirty sound in T-Rex's Bang a Gong! It only happens once and I can't imagine what the heck it is, but I wait for it every time. It sounds exactly like the sound the spear made going into Cyclopse's eye in the movie Jason and the Argonauts. Or was it Medusa's eye? Ok, I probably lost you now.

Hi Stegor,

we had this happen on a song called 'Blue Sun' some years back, it was kind of a spoken word, worldy piece and at the end of the track after we'd finished mixing we noticed a shrill call at the end of it, it was uncanny as the voice sounded like it was perfectly placed, like it rebounded off stone walls, we left it because we couldn't explain it and it made the song more spiritual for us. Thanks for posting this topic & I'm going to listen to your song now. I love the title and the image of the dove's wings whirring away, chilling, I'm there!

Well...over at Lars Mars we have this problem all the time...it's Glenn's guitar playing. Fortunately, with the advent of quality editing software, this problem has been removed forever ; )

At 2:16 it's just a normal musical sound but at 2:21 what I hear is a snare vibrating or a decay from a cymbal crash. Let me know what turns up when you solo the parts of the drum kit. It's definitely coming from the drum kit. (imo)

Kurt! I'm embarrassed to admit I never made the connection b'twixt you and Lars Mars! I love that about this place. I've been here going on 2 years and I'm still connecting the dots. Thanks for your special recognition of this particular song, which we've quoted on our page. It means a lot!

Maria - I figured Blue Sun wasn't on your page but I looked anyway. You should put it on there because there's hardly any songs there and you need a few more (a little sarcasm for ya...heh heh)

Haha, you're right Stegor :) I was thinking of doing some cleaning in there and maybe switch a few songs, I'd have to dig for Blue Sun because I think it's been at the bottom of a dusty drawer for a while now, I'm sure there's a place for all these lost songs, it's crossed my mind what would the kids do with them all if we popped our clogs LOL!! By the way I really enjoyed your song and added to our stop the clocks station, it's beautiful and mesmerising, thanks for sharing & bye for now :)

I just jeard it Steg.. it's kewl.. leave it.. especially given the songs lyrics.

When we recorded BBE and later listened I heard something that happens between the guitar and strings interplay that wasn't intentional. I'd have to go back and listen again to say where it is.

(Richard again I am impressed!)
