WHO WOULD YOU PICK!!???
Why is it that out of all the kazillionaires out there, none of them have ever decided to put together a "superstar" band!? To select the artists that they would like to have collaborate on an album together, and pay them the money to do so!!??

I however!!.....would pay good Gil to hear an album by this band:

Vocals - Mike Patton FNM/MR BUNGLE/FANTOMAS/PEEPINGTOM/TOMAHAWK
Drums - Jean-Paul Gaster CLUTCH
Bass - Geezer Butler BLACK SABBATH/ G/Z/R
Guitar - Duane Denison JESUS LIZARD/FIREWATER/CARGO CULT
Keys - Harmar Superstar HARMAR SUPERSTAR

Guest musicians: John Zorn, Snoop Dogg, Michael Buble, Andre 3000 and Peaches

Now don't go whining yer filthy scabs....but you can only choose from those that are still LIVING to be in your dream band, 'cos you're gonna want to record an album..........can't do that with corpses!!! You do get to have up to five guest musicians though, but pick wisely!!!

Love Jaque

I think that it would also be important to not only have great musicians, but musicians that would WORK WELL TOGETHER.

That said:
Vocals: James Mercer (The Shins)
Bass: Peter Hook (Joy Division/New Order)
Guitar: Richard Lloyd (Television/Matthew Sweet)
Drums: Jody Stephens (Big Star)

Another band:
Bass/vocals: Nick Lowe
Guitars: Curt Kirkwood (Meat Puppets)
Drums: Jody Stephens (again)
Keyboards: Steve Nieve (The Attractions)

He's the most LYRICAL drummer that I can think of.
The one that adds the most to the songs.

Oh, and here's another one:
Nick Lowe: Bass and backing vocals
Jody Stephens: drums
Bob Andrews (Brinsley Schwarz): Keys
Richard Lloyd: Lead Guitar
ME: Lead vocals, rhythm guitars, songwriter

I am glad to see another big Mike Patton fan out there Jack. He doesn't get nearly enough credit for his influence on modern rock music.

Anyone hear her cover of the ACDC song "You shook me All Night Long?" It's the funniest thing I've ever heard.

Uh oh... you got me started...

My selection of artists is actually the lineup of Jethro Tull that existed from 1971 - 1975. A slight variation went from 76 - 79. After '79 they disintegrated. Jethro Tull has existed since then, but only as a shadow of their former selves. See, Ian Anderson apparently thought that he actually WAS Jethro Tull, and it didn't matter who else was in his band because they were really just back up musicians. So he started hiring other musicians with no personalities, perhaps so as to not be outshone by his bandmates.

What he didn't seem to realize was:

That Bariemore Barlow was the best drummer England ever produced, according to John Bonham.

That John Evan was one of the best rock keyboardists of all time. He avoided the synthesized excesses of the likes of Wakeman and Emerson and stuck mostly to piano and organ. When he did play synths he sounded like nobody else. He was never one to play unnecessary notes in between the necessary ones just to show everyone how good he was. Played with amazing feeling. Had a great sense of humor and personality. I named my son (Evan) after him.

Jeffrey Hammond was an amazing showman. Like Brian Eno, he wasn't a natural musician, but clever as hell. His stage presence sometimes eclipsed even Ian Anderson's. There have been better bass players, but I've never seen one put on a show like he did and not miss a beat.

Luckily Ian was smart enough to hold onto Martin Barre on guitar, well because he's amazing.

The odd thing about this lineup is that these people were so absolutely and completely Jethro Tull, that I don't think any of them could have ever made it in any other band. None of them did. Barlow has done high profile sessions (Page and Plant for instance), but never made it into another successful band. World class musicians, but outside of their original group they had no identity.

Ok, I'm done with my hero worship session.

Well you asked!

I'm enjoying your band in my head, Chris. Some outstanding jazz/fusion action going there with some weird art-rock twists. I think you might be thinking of Jerry Harrison in place of Chris Franz tho?

Ben - I'll have to admit I'm completely in the dark. I try to keep up with the scene, especially in England, but you got me.

Soo - That's just weird!

Jack - I get some of that... I think I can imagine it... at least I've heard of all those peoples...

Todd - I'm getting it! I can really hear your influences in your music. You have a LOT of influences.

I need another go:

Vocals, Miscellaneous: Mark Hollis (Talk Talk)
Guitar, vocals, keyboards: Bill Nelson (Be Bop Deluxe)
Guitar: Robert Fripp (King Crimson)
Bass: Mick Karn (Japan, lots of others)
Drums: Bill Bruford (do I hafta say it?)

With production and special treatments by Brian Eno
