anybody sold a song from this site?
just wondering? this seems to be a very self congratulatory site, sort of artist patting each other on the back for a job well done and all that, but does anybody generate any sales from it?
Not that I'm totally down on it, but this place seems sort of an indie heaven, everyone is happy to create but nobody's trying to make a living from it. Kinda sad for us, as we're a bit behind on the rent y'know?

To answer your question .... Some folks out there have been kind enough to purchase a few of my tunes ... I haven't made enough to start paying the rent yet but I know others on here are selling a few also and there are even a few that are doing quite well .... if people are willing to buy my tunes they would surely be willing to buy yours .. (as you are a much more polished musician than myself) ...
If you are trying to pay your rent with your tunes here it might help to increase your efforts at selling them ... and maybe even adding more than two tunes ...
If all else fails ... I'm willing to share my tent ... providing you don't snore to loud .. :)

I sold a whole bunch of my DMDs and that was only out for 6 months. Course I am pretty well known in the indie world at large. :)

I've sold a few songs, not enough to pay the rent but I'm not really here for that. To me, IAC is a great networking and promotional tool to utilise to get my music 'out there' and into peoples ears and to link up with other likeminded musos.
Being able to upload my songs and embed the IAC player on my websites is a fantastic service too and well worth going Prime for. :-)

I've not sold anything yet, but I wasn't expecting to straight away. (Well I did hope for the odd one or two :-))
I've had plenty of listens which is as important to me. Just getting heard by a different audience is an important benifit of being here I think.
With anything internet you need a lot of hits to get sales, I'd imagine it's the same here as anyhere else.
Time and publicity will get you sales, I'm sure.
I would have bought a couple of tracks from people myself but for two reasons,
1. I'm skinter than a skint thing, :-)
2 My google checkout account is backed by a maestro debit card, and apparently they can't deal in US Dollars (only Sterling and Euros). If this site used paypal they would handle the currency conversion, I'm suprised a company as ambitious as google doesn't also do that. I have no alternate card so am stumped by that one.

We (Susan Raven) have sold a few songs here... but as SP said, it ain't gonna pay the rent!
It's an interesting dichotomy, thousands of plays per month but no sales... I don't think it's to do with the "indie heaven" attitude, I relate it more to the stranglehold that the majors have on real world promotion, people buying what they're told is good and all that stuff, taken along with the attitude so many people seem to have that independent music should be given away.
Most of our sales happen at and through gigs, with quite a lot via CDBaby too.
And fwiw I can't stand that old attitude of "you buy mine and I'll buy yours"... I find it to be really degrading and totally unrealistic.

Larree..You're the gold standard -sales wise- by which we all try and measure ourselves..
I'm a little behind, having sold 2 tracks since being here 3 years.Am planning-like you-to 'go professional' on this site tho within the next 3 months- and make it put real bread on the table-and gravy!
Just need to get my sales up to about 60 a day to do it..

I'm surprised to learn that this site doesn't accept US dollars. Aren't most people here Americans?
To be honest I don't like too much patting each other on the back unless it's totally genuinely meant. If I like someone's music I'll say so and I never say I like something if I don't. As well as some excellent music on this site there is some rubbish, but that applies everywhere of course.
I don't bother to buy any music unless I really love it AND it's been well mixed and produced/polished.
If your main aim is to make a comfortable living from music it's probably better to join the mainstream and get 'packaged' but it's understandable that a 'label' won't invest in promoting you if you won't fit in with what they believe will deliver the best chance of getting a return from their not-insignificant investment in you.
Personally I prefer to chase the (musical) vision and let the dollar follow (if it will).
No sales from IAC so far but this isn't where I would expect most sales.

"Doesn't accept US dollars!!! Are you taking angel dust? Stop starting really dopey rumors, Red Robin. "
I think Red Robin misinterpreted my comment about Google Checkout.
To clarify: my google checkout account draws funds from my debit card. It's my debit card that won't deal in Dollars (this site deals in dollars). Google (unlike paypal) doesn't appear to carry out currency conversion.
If you have an american card or maybe even a different english one it will no doubt deal in dollars, so there wil be no problem.

Thankyou for clarifying your post, Andy - I did misinterpret it as it was (unintentionally) ambiguous.
Thanks.

Just like anything else you have to work and sell yourself, It also helps to have ear friendly sounds. So scream in the freakin streets. Tell Nana to tell all her friends.
Tell the kids at school, Buy my music @ Iac Hear my music on Kiac Radio.
Yell it at your shows. Or just sit and wait. Like they say, nothing in this life is free.
Oh wait, music is free now isn't it? Peace

Echoing statements of others.
I have sold some of my songs here but not enough to really count as making any significant amount of money.
Hope that answers your question.

Well, parts of music are free - playing, writing, singing, they're all free... but the moment you start thinking about recording something, even on your PC or cassette deck at home, there are costs involved!
And hey, if you want to eat and wear clothes and pay the bills, then you better start selling some aspect of your music, or as sure as eggs is eggs, you're gonna be a music hobbyist with a day job. No offense to anyone, just telling it like I see it!

I think alot of the problem with selling our stuff here is the mountain of information needed to sell a dollar download. I mean who wants to spend fifteen minutes giving your life story just for a dollar? My opinion is if the process was a little simpler we might sell more songs. Now to my private jet I earned from my songs! WJU

I've sold like 10 songs since I joined in 2005. And I know that is was my friend in Michigan who bought them. haha.
Any suggestions people?
I was thinking of adding one of those myspace bots to add more friends on there and get more ears on my shit. Can anyone recommend a good friend adding bot for myspace? Preferably free? lol. Or just another avenue to pursue?

The only time i've sold (a few) albums was last year when i was adding, adding adding people on myspace(tho not with one of those 'bots' lol) just people from places i knew would be generally receptive to the music i make..And you can get a stack of non-musician fans there, not just (generally) other musicians like here...
Much as i love IAC-Its for the brilliant STATION facilities, the artist community and finding ace new songs-certainly not as a promotional vehicle for selling my music...If i was really really serious about that, myspace is obviously the far better option..

We have sold MP3s both here and on another site (www.cruxy.com)
plus we have 2 "free" sites
Most of these sales are to "friends" or Fans who we have cultivated and brainwashed, into believing they like, or need to own our music----
My 15 year old son thinks they are crazy as he knows how to get any music he desires ---mainstream or Indie off the web for free!!
My point---you have to have some sort of relationship with folk, b4 they will part with $$$$$$

As the CD goes by the way of the 8-track tape, what does the future hold? The remaining "record labels" (5 in all) have no clue! AND....neither do the "indies":...There are too many places to sell your music and not enough fans. It's simply spread out so vast.
Napster, CD Baby, Amazon, Itunes, tons of small free music sites, on infinitum. I actually think that after all the "stars" who have their own labels, like Toby Keith and Clint Black realize they are losing money because of free down loads, we will enter a state of confusion so profound that the stars and remaining labels won't know whether Sheet or get off the pot! Then along will come a new technology that will make the download a dinosaur.
You know, all you can do is just make music for the love of creating! That's it!

wow- thanks for the feedback on the post. It's good to see that even a few of you have been making purchases and sales, it makes me respect this site that much more. If, Larree, you've even sold 3 thousand never mind three million downloads you are now my newest hero! Really!
Oh, and thanks for the tent offer, I think we'll be fine for the next while but you never know. ; )

I only ever sold one DMD CD which was suprising since it is only on for 3 dollars and I have only recently put the individual tracks for sale at the lowest price. It does not bother me as I did not want to make money from Dirge's music, I just wanted the world to hear it but it would have been nice to be able to give the money to the musicians for all their efforts. It does seem strange however since the page is linked to MySpace and I have had so many messages from people who say they like her songs, yet it seems musicians do not seem to buy other musicians work.
