Why the Music Industry is Drowning and Nobody Cares

The music industry was always full of pirates feasting on the blood and tears of tormented artists. Now that the stolen ship is finally being looted in turn by the scavengers of society – that is to say, everyone – the high seas will never be the same. The music makers clinging to the carcass will go down with the drowning but those cutting loose from their losses and singing as they swim away may survive to see the far shore.

Those malleable souls that sail the way the wind wants will have to navigate newborn frontiers, actively weaving over the waves and grasping for life. No longer captives of an outmoded industry but captains of newfound destiny, on borrowed boats barging past bloated beasts buried on the bottom. The creatures of the deep are caught up in the glut of compact disc debris, a plastic miasma of discarded waste referred to as "pop music". It handcuffs their fins and suffocates the innocent. I say, get on with the future! Let go of the possessions pushed down your throat and rush forward freestyle into the unknown dawn!

While it was colorful, your post would make a lot more sense on another site. Here they have DMDs which are a step beyond a "hi-fi capsule". The drowning you speak of actually has been in progress for many years... and lastly, there are a lot of people on this site alone who care about it, so your title premise comes off as a bit shallow. That said, at least you're not boring, so Bravo, Mofo!

I think I'm attracted by the flies as I keep alighting on the things that they alight on. So I agree with the buzzy one...you can't beat some 'personalisation' but the sentiments may ring some bells...

I have a friend who has been offered a contract and he's waying the pros vs cons at this moment. It certainly is an eleborate process to sign with a record company. I was wondering about others thoughts- it is best to stay independent. My friend has excellent resources on his own (a band, recording equipment, video production manager etc.) What truly legitimizes an artist anyway? I would love any feedback to pass along. Jo Ellen

I know artists who have won major contests then refused the record deal that they won. I know artists who signed something that they regretted for years. If it sounds too good to be true, if you have to stretch your expectations based on what common sense tells you, you should probably stay far away.

I think its about time we see some changes in the record industry.. of course there will be casualties of any war.. but its well worth it if the major labels get minimized even just slightly.
