New Æ Single Drops Tonight at MIDNIGHT!
i'm very excited and doubly nervous to be bringing FIGHT ALL NIGHT to your ears tomorrow. this is not my OFFICIAL first single off the next record, it's just something new to share with those of you who've been waiting around so patiently for more music. i bring it exclusively to IAC because for the past four years, the IAC community have been my #1 supporters here on the World Wild Web. i am grateful to be part of such an amazing portal for independent music.
bless each of you for listening.
.........................
about FIGHT ALL NIGHT
i wrote this a year ago, in one sitting at the piano - the words, chords, and arrangement are exactly as they were the day it was created. the new record centers around a collection of song trilogies, and this is the "pop"-iest song of its respective bunch. among my closest friends and fans, it won the vote to be the first leaked out of all of the tracks from this year's DORK studios sessions.
i wanted to give the lyrics extra tension through a casual, almost humorless delivery. the subject has been worn thin - it's not that she doesn't love you, it's that she's got no love left. fighting for your love has become pointless and trivial. disappointment and hesitation strangle the passion out of the vocals, save for a moment of truth in the bridge - it isn't what she wanted, it's only the best she can do. the music needed to match that sense of resignation; it's the standard form letter that you leave at the door on your way out of love. it's a lie pretending to be hopeful, because it's the only choice left.
the heart of FIGHT ALL NIGHT is its utter simplicity - classic pop structure and all organic instruments (the synth string intro is the only digital instrumentation on this recording). voice, piano, guitar, bass, and drums. i played each of them, as i did with "long as it's sweet" and am doing with most of the recordings on SONGS.
i cut the original demo of FIGHT ALL NIGHT in garageband. some of the original bones appear on the recording you'll hear tomorrow. the rest of the song i performed and recorded at DORK studios in los angeles with neil couser. because i am an obsessive perfectionist, let me note that this is not the version that will appear on my upcoming record (if it makes the final cut). it'll be close, but with some additional instrumentation, additional vocals, and a new bass and drum take. i'm still a novice studio drummer at best so i'd like to improve on that, and i've written a much cooler bassline since we cut this. it will also be remixed and properly mastered.
here are the lyrics:
FIGHT ALL NIGHT
unraveling the web
tangled in your eyes
you've been such a mess
and so have i
try to make you smile
but you just shift your gaze
ask me over tonight
but tell me off today
yeah
and we can make love
yeah
and we can make nothing out of love
yeah
we can fight all night
i'll run, you hide
buy myself a drink
first in about a year
cause things that you don't say
have me thisclose to tears
but i blink them away
and try to be your friend
but friends don't treat their friends this way
i've gotta let it end
yeah
and we can make love
yeah
and we can make nothing out of love
yeah
we can fight all night
i'll run, you hide
promised you this
and i don't want to quit
but you don't make it easy on me
saying such an easy goodbye
yeah
and we can make love
yeah
and we can make nothing out of love
yeah
we can fight all night
i'll run, you hide
i'll run, you hide
i'll run, you hide
you hide
.................
I LOVE YOU, IAC!
thank you for supporting independent music.
