thoughts on genre choice?
hello!

i was wondering what other folks thought regarding choice of genres for their songs, to wit:

is it better to place yourself in a more general, larger genre (say, "alternative"), and hope that more folks come across your track because it's in the 'big bin', but sacrifice such things as higher chart placement/more direct visibility?

or to more narrowly define your track (say, "alternative retro and psychedelic") and achieve more visibility through a higher "chartng" track and being among a smaller pool of songs, while potentially sacrificing some views from those who search pretty generally/cast a wide net.

assuming the track fits in whatever the narrower genre is, what do other folks do with their own stuff?

thanks!

I'm purely led by which genre I think my song fits - Nothing more and nothing less.

The problem comes if there isn't a genre to suit. 'No Genre' doesn't really help because there's no such thing in reality.

right on, and thanks for the reply.

but, like i said- what if the song fits in both genres? a larger, more 'catch-all' or a smaller, more specific genre?

thanks again!

Good point

Often a song won't do much in a popular genre if it's a bit unusual for that genre
"Country" is a good example-------we had a song "Ready to go" which is about pig hunting---it's country in New Zealand, but not really in the USA, so we changed it to miscellanious----still not a hit, but getting some plays!

thanks for the reply, silverwood.

i guess sometimes it's just difficult to determine where/how to place your music to try and ensure it has a chance to be listened to by as many people as possible.

and, hopefully, even enjoyed by some of them ;)

thanks!

Duplicate it, Retitle one (Country version, for example) and place one in each of the two genres.
