Pleased To Meet You
Howdy one and all.
This site is really cool and I am looking forward to becoming a part of the community.
I've been doing music for many a moon now and I live in the mddle of somewhere that is dry and desolate when it comes to musicians or any facsimile of a community of folks like us. So it is heartwarming to see how this community has thrived due to the support you guys have shown one another.
I'm also looking forward to listening to as much of your stuff as I get a chance to.
I'm also interested in how you guys record, what equipment you use, special techniques, how to get the most out of "affordable" equipment, what inspires you, etc.
If you have any advice for this newbie or as the Vietnam Vets call the FNG, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks and may God bless.

Thanks TMWNB for your welcome.
And thanks for the positive feedback. I'm still interested in what you (or anyone else) uses for recording. There's something about "shop talk" that interests me.
Now I'm going to go check you out as well.

Well ... I'm currently using my PC ... I use two cheap programs for recording ..
I use Wave Pad to record my wave files and Audacity to mix the tracks...
I've just purchased Ableton Live but am still working on the learning curve ...

All the tracks on my page except "My Sweet Verity" and "When The Last Beatle is Gone" were recorded with a microphone I made from scratch ... I recently picked up a Peavey PVM 38 i and a Shure M57 though and I also bought a M-Audio Mobile Pre USB interface that is improving my sound a bit ..

I use two acoustic guitars ... a Washburn DS31 and a Cheap Johnson Brothers that I converted to electric by making a pick-up out of a Piezzo Buzzer element ...
I am starting to incorporate some piano into my stuff and I also use a cheap casio for some sound effects .. I am also starting to use my bass a little more .. another cheap guitar.. (old Japanese model Harmony) ...

Well that's about it ... I don't have much ...Maybe someday I'll have better means but I enjoy working with what I do have ... :)

Sam

Hi guys thought I'd throw my two bobs worth in.
Welcome Jack, I'm sure you're gonna have a great time here, there are a lot of smart people floating around on this site. You've already met one of the coolest, that I've come across, that being Sam.

Well I had a listen to your songs and I have to agree with Sam, the recording quality is pretty darn good already, but like most of you probably strive for perfection.

I too use my pc to record onto, I use a program called Magix audio 2004 (new when I got it) and it seems to do an ok job. On the latest song "I should have", I used a Rode NT1-A microphone which I found to have a nice warm tone. One guitar was plugged in via a Zoom effects pedal and the other instruments were plugged straight into a Creative soundblaster X Fi sound card, and the drums were loops I bought from Beta music monkey.

That's pretty much it jack, hope it helps you out in your quest for knowledge.
Cheers Mark

Thanks again to Mark and Sam for the warm welcome.
Mark I also use a Rode NT-1. The keyboard player from the worship team I used to be with was a pro recording engineer and I bought it on his recommendation. It is by far the best mic I've ever owned. Thats what was used on You Are My Lord which was recorded on a Roland VS 1880 which is what I still use. I haven't gone to computer based recording yet since I feel like I'm pretty pleased with the quality and the capabilities of the 1880. I especially like the quality of the effects boards. I also use a Taylor 514 CE which has been great for recording. I'm a firm believer of the thinking that if the source recording is good then you won't have to monkey with the mix much and I try to get the best source recording I can using what I have. I also use a cheapo tube mic pre that is ok but certainly can't match what the pro studios use, which is out of my price range for now. For drums I use a Boss DR 670 DR Rhythm machine. I rarely use programmed patterns and lay down kick and snare, then cymbals and fills on other tracks in an attempt to get a more live drummer sound. I have like no patience for programming sequemces and stuff. Call it lazy but I think I've developed a method that gets a more live band sound that way. For bass I use a Fender Precision and for electric guitar a trusty ol' Fender Strat; both of which get plugged straight into the VS 1880 and making use of the amp simulators and other effects inside the unit.
For the song, He Reached Down, that was recorded about 6-7 years ago using a Boss 8 track digital recorder and a mediocre mic. The recording shows it too. But it also goes to show that you can get decent quality out of so-so equipment.
I remember starting out about 25 years ago on a Tascam 4 track cassette (remember those things?) which was a great way to learn how to develop muti tracking skills. In 1990 I moved on to an Otari 8 track open reel that was used and a workhorse which I remember paying $2800.00 for and that didn't include the mixing board and all the outboard effects. t was a great analog setup but it is just crazy when you consider that within a few years digital multi tracking would be available for the masses at crazy low prices. The stuff we record on in our homes now was unheard of as far as affordability even just 10 years ago. I remember reading way back then how this digital thing was going to revolutionize music, how its made and distributed and look where we are now. It is just amazing to see how things have changed.
I can't imagine what the next 10 years are going to bring.
Peace out and God bless.

It is hard to imagine where we'll be in ten years time Jack...everything is moving so fast. Even this site. I read somewhere the other day that over 400 new artists joined in December alone. I guess all you can do is roll with it and enjoy the ride.
Oh and write the whole experience down in the form of a song...(nice segway here)...Check out my song Slow down for an example. I should be an advertising exec..lol....Cheers Mark
