Playing the Rules
I have this song here which I had tons of fun working on at all the stages, and now I have tons of fun listening to it. I suspect some might like it, and some will hate it, but I really like it, and it tumbles me closer to a drum and bass world I keep trying to set up in...
...and more like the last three are coming. Right now there's Tuning of the Generations, Treble and Bass, and this one: Playing the Rules.... (they're all top on my page)
All coming from seeds planted at the jam for my birthday. They all have Matt's drums and Sean's bass centrified.
Come on and check it out, and it will be original and heartfelt.
This is my first mix of it. Hoping it's my last mix of it. Does the mix translate well to your speakers? Did I put the voice too loud. People tell me to turn up the voice on stuff sometimes, so I just left it here, but not sure it's not too loud.

catchy vibe Bob,added it to the Vibe
There are lots of tasty touches throughout this work, well placed instrumentation and interesting ear perking twists on this arrangement. The bass and drums do indeed hold it together like glue and the funky guitar is just there, love those horn shots and soft piano going on has an appealing quality, and your mix works well, Certainly enjoy the whole presentation.
I like your vocals always have, your style is unique and grabs the listeners attention, , I think it has good balance and really different with how you have developed this one, well crafted.
Playing the Rules

Wow, you kind of caught me off guard with this one. I was immediately reminded of "Trouble Man" by Marvin Gaye. The music for this song has that edgy blaxploitation sound of the late 60's early 70's. I could almost see a playa cruising down the road in a Lincoln Continental. His big wide brim blocking your view of his face. Very cool vibe! I always want the music I listen to to make me feel or visualize something. This one brought me back to the days when I had hair on my head. A great big assed Afro! Yep, those were the days. But I digress, the vocals are all sweet and patently you. Everything here is a standout for me. Love that Bass, the extended Wah guitar, horn stabs and appropriately spaced drums. Then you squeezed in some piano to accentuate the whole shebang. Loved It!
Much Respect,

The voice is not too loud at all. It's about equal in importance to any of the other instruments - that is, it's part of the groove and is not really about lyrics. If you want your lyrics to come across, then it's not loud enough, but I don't think you were after that. It's a great groove.

Nice track, Bob. You are someone who could go very far. Your voice is incredibly unique and yet very accessible. It's a true gift. I regret that I was not blessed with such a wonderful instrument. I wish you well in all your endeavors. Your writing is also one of a kind. That's something money can't buy.

Thanks for the comments. It took at least a decade or more before hardly anyone liked my voice. The main thing in music for me is learning to sing the way I always felt I could sing, but never could get it for a very long time. I have a tendency to oversing and sound pretty bad. As time goes on I learn how to keep it gentle, and then there is power, but it is such a fragile state for me that I pretty much feel like a learner all the time, and totally feel prone to blowing it with oversing.
I am older now for sure and one of the best parts of getting older was approaching singing the way I thought I could before, but I couldn't.
But it's fragile. Yet it is the thing I wanted most and kept after for years, and so when it comes out the way I wanted, well music then has done what I hoped.
Probably a bit late now for me to get anywhere in the biz, but at least my albums are beginning to sound as I felt they would twenty years ago.

Right on, man! Whether you ever get anywhere in the biz (which totally should be all over a talent like you) or not, your albums have gotten to be masterpieces, and I think they represent a significant gift that you have given the world. And isn't that your aim as a musician and songwriter? I was listening to "Early Afternoon Sun" or whatever it's called (I don't pay much attention to titles) just last night and every song on it is so sonically rich, and then on top of that the lyrics are thoughtful and poetic and your playing is just amazing.
