To Me, the Central Album Has Been “ Talking Book”
Since my sister gave it to me when I was 11. She said I’d like it, and it has been central ever since. No matter how my tastes vary over the years, this thing has always been central.

Innervisions and Songs In The Key Of Life had a major impact on my life and my music.

Yep, all of those albums played a central role in my music appreciation and development. But the biggest inspiration that I ever had was "Whats Going On" by Marvin. That is my prime central point right there.

If I widen the circle a bit it’s also “What’s Going On,” “There’s a Riot Going On,” and Al Green’s “Greatest Hits.”
Those have always been important regardless of what age or musical stage I’ve been in since I was a kid.

yes, I remember the very first moment I heard "What's Goin' On" and I got teary eyed because it signaled a heightened awareness of social issues and the need for activism in addressing societal problems in a way that was new to that genre of music. Musically it was also amazing as was "Sexual Healing" another song by Marvin Gaye that was revolutionary in it's musical and lyrical construction. I wish I had written it! I've tried to create that groove to no avail. Maybe someday...

Now, compared to 'Talking Book' or 'What's Going On?' this one is fairly recent (1995), but ever since the first time I heard
Alien Lanes (Guided By Voices)
It has remained in consistent rotation.
A life-changing record, in the most-literal sense. And, as I said, a constant in my life since the first time I heard it.

Yes, central to my listening. A definitive album in the cannon of all music that I love.

Talking Book is perfect from beginning to end, as is What's Goin' On and The World Is a Ghetto by War.
The record my life is centered around is side B of Neil Young's On The Beach, also Never Mind The Bollocks by the Sex Pistols.

Yeah, I love the Sex Pistols too - the Clash ain't bad either!! Neil Young is up there with the rock gods for sure - I was particularly drawn to his work with CS&N and Buffalo Springfield. "Flying On The Ground Is Wrong" is one of my favs. (It was written by Neil) I gave my son his middle name: 'Springfield' after the band.
