My Daughter Wants Me to Leave This Rough Recording as Is...Any Opinions?
My voice is clearly shaky, but she likes that quality for this particular song, and she thinks it only needs slight mixing adjustments. My plan was to try to do a whole other recording, but now she has me wondering because it does move me in this form.
SIng it to your kids. Here's the link, or just click to my site and it's the second song called "Something New Under the Sun."
Think it's gonna be the title track:

It's actually so raw it's embarrassing...

Hi Bob,
Nice tune!
Personally, I think the tune deserves the 'full' treatment. As nice and personal as this demo is, there are places where the production takes this listener away from the song. There's my $.02, fwiw.

You know that I'm a Bob fanboy, right?
So, of course I think that this is a great song!
It's a nice, intimate recording but, I also agree that it deserves the full-production treatment. Mostly because I know what you are capable of. I also think that you are capable of producing this and still maintain that intimate feel.
Personally, I would not really add much to the arrangement, but I would just remix/re-record it with the thought in your mind that this is going to be more than a demo.
Nice work (again).

I love the lyrics and the melody. You could add some instrumentation and still keep it intimate. I can hear bass and a cello happening for sure, maybe a tambourine and/or kick drum to hold the tempo together. I agree it's too raw for prime time as is but it's the core of a song with great potential. Some harmony on the vocals would be nice, ala something from Abbey Road which is what this song reminds me of.

Keep it, and in parenthesis put ( "" " version) insert the name of your daughter :)
You can then record the full treatment later. I have been thinking of recording simple acoustic versions of alot of my songs in the que, and then record the full versions later when I have time to arrange new parts. I think if a song stands up stripped down, you really have something..
I do think the vocals can be brought up a bit ..and there are few (minor) intonation glitches (just a few), but overall it is very good. There is an intimacy about it. and you should keep it.
I would suggest double tracking a few of the higher note passages if you record it again, I think it would fill out the sound.
Nice write..
Jeff

Thank you very much. I am leaning toward another recording based much on this. We'll see how it goes. I've been playing it a lot. It's been very helpful to hear what people think.
