"Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men." True, or just a cynical anecdote?
It has been my belief that most (and maybe all) governments of the world are corrupt, and controlled by the wealthiest minority, and it is in their interest to keep the poor poor, and make the rich richer. Could this be true?

It is my belief that power-hungry men are that way to get babes. Some are in it for the money, but that just helps them get babes. Almost all men are sex-driven. It's in our natures.
In all seriousness, there are so many examples of power corrupting. It takes someone like Gandhi or Jesus or MLK to not be corrupted by it. They were pretty damned powerful. But they weren't making the laws, either, so no one was lobbying them or giving them kickbacks. Most of the rich are that way because they value wealth over humanity. I have to admire people like Bill Gates, who is a very powerful person and is using his wealth in very beneficent ways. He may be a dweeb, but I don't see him as corrupt.
Governments, on the other hand, are almost always comprised of people who start out wanting to help people and be public servants, but as the individuals gain power, they find it easier to bend situations to help themselves.
So far, I see President Obama as an exception. I believe that he is earnestly trying to be a public servant. Hopefully, this will be an honest administration. I think President Carter was also an honest man. It is the people in the middle ranks, who are not held up to as much scrutiny, who abuse their power. Whom do you in other countries see as being honest men in powerful positions. I'd like to think there are more out there.
It is true everywhere that the wealthiest hold the power. Money makes the rules. I refer back to my original statement, that men in politics are after wealth, which makes them more attractive. It's all ego. Maybe that's why Lincoln was such a great president - he knew he wasn't handsome and had already lost the love of his life before becoming president.

Truly good, powerful people are almost always persecuted, and usually murdered by the wicked. I pray this will not be so in the case of Barack Obama. Tom, you always have good, sensible things to say.
