Dude the Rolling Stones suck harder than life and I'm not the only one who thinks so.

Besides what do you care it's only my opinion?

And you're right I wouldn't waste my time watching a Rolling Stones movie if someone paid me and even then I'd feel ripped off.

If it makes you feel any better, I also think that Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd are overrated.

Yes I know I'm not supposed to say these things. Don't crucify me over it, I'm just not 45.

I grew up after those groups and probably don't realize there "impact" on music or whatever. But listening to them now, I don't see what the big deal is personally. I know everybody likes them and I'm supposed to as well, which is maybe why I'm turned off. There's bands and artists I'm listening to now that in my opinion are far more impressive, profound, unique and talented than some of the classic rock icons.

Fly as far me not knowing rock well whatever you say pal. I've listened to and played it pretty much my entire life and just because it ain't 40 years old doesn't mean it's not real. Don't be an asshole just because my opinion varies from yours.

No, the internet is NOT over rated...ding bat.

And I'm digging what Jesse is saying here...
I think the more i'm exposed to what my son and my students are listening too the more I appreciate and the more I realize that things have advanced and changed and PASSED me by..
as it should be!

I think it' GREAT that Jesse disregards those bands, it's time to move on really.
The Metal Core scene is pretty cool!, easily as cool as the punk scene ever was and there are some Monster players, All That Remains is a band I just tuned into this year that is just amazing, the skill level and the inventiveness is great,
For me it's all about the guitars of course,
Jimmy page and David Gilmore? sure, they were gods when I was a kid, but todays players wipe the floor with those guys.

I was always a Prog and Jazz listener, Return To Forever, Dregs, Billy Cobham...

But now I'm always listening to Dream Theater, who I think are the greatest band in Rock today.....by far.
I haven't intentionally listened to Zepplin in years.

Pink floyd will always get to me though, I think because that was the band I really identified the most with in my teens.

Can we please stop judging bands based on age? There are vintage bands who are great and there are vintage bands who suck. There are modern bands who are great and modern bands who suck and what age you are has nothing to do with whether you think a band is great or sucks. There are plenty of young kids who love music from the 60's and plenty of older people who love tody's music. Let's catch up with the way things really are at the moment and not generalize about how they never were. Opinions should be based on criteria other than age.

Passed you by, neverneverband? Are you saying that chronology is progress? That's mighty shallow.

I have a niece and nephew, 11 and 7, their mom bought them Hot Rocks and it's their favorite CD, next to the Beatles. :~D

I'm in my 30s but even I find it funny how Jesse considers 45 to be the age of decrepitness.

what I'm saying is it's ridiculous to expect young people to respect this stuff.
When you were loving Zepplin would you have shut it off and listened to Glen Miller just because your mother said so?

Really, I think 40s and 50s or 60s show so little consideration or respect for younger peoples music , it's a small wonder they have so little respect for ours.

"Really, I think 40s and 50s or 60s show so little consideration or respect for younger peoples music , it's a small wonder they have so little respect for ours."

Exactly. It's not even so much about young people not respecting classic rock, tons of people my age and younger worship it. It will always be that way because we're supposed to think that way... we've been programmed for it. I mean shit the number one music mag in the country is called Rolling Stone, ya know? But hardly anybody from that era or even few from today recognize todays players and bands in the same regards, and there's some really innovative and cutting edge music going on, just like there was back then. Plus, there's lots of bands that are more about progressing as artists and musicians as opposed to partying and getting wasted and living that kind of rock star lifestyle like say the Stones or Zeppelin. I respect that more.

Fly I don't think 45 is decrepit, I'm not a child. 80 is old dude. I think it's arrogant that people dismiss me as musically uncultured because I don't care for most of classic rocks big names. I used the age reference to make a point about people only thinking the older stuff is what matters when there's tons of music today to be appreciated.

Like never never said, let's move on already. For Christs sake haven't we all heard these songs a billion times before? I want something new, something different. I guess I'm fried on classic rock, I've heard it all before. It's in the past, I want to look forward.

It's not like I make this decision hastily, I work at a classic rock radio station.

Internet definitely not over-rated ...

As far as the bands listed ... I disagree whole-heartedly ...

In the first place, moving on is great but I doubt very seriously if ANY of us would be making music if it weren't for the sounds those before us made ... How do you over-rate that ?

In the second place those bands that have reached iconic status have done so on the merit of their music, not because of some drug crazed moment in time ...
So you want to argue that there are cutting edge artist out there today just as good ? ... You won't get any arguement from me ... after all there should be, look at the difference in gear they have to work with ! ... and some of these Artist will join the list of Icon's ... and then 35 years from now, some guy will get on the internet and say that THOSE guys are over-rated .. :)

But one doesn't get to join the list just by talking, or even by being good ...
Although I don't like all of the Stones music, one cannot argue that they are the HARDEST working Rock band EVER ... and that is one bone I have to pick with newer bands ...

Go back in the "old" era and look at these bands ... look at thier schedual, from T.V. and radio appearances to concert venues, and yet they still managed to cut at least one new album a year ... and in the case of guys like Dylan every few months ... That is how you reach Iconic status ... (and they still had time to party) ... :)

I can't tell you how many times I read a review of a "new" bands album that starts like this ... "Finally the long awaited 2nd album ... blah blah blah ... or read an interview where the band says ... "yeah, we've been discussing going into the studio ... or well, were still tinkering with the new album, we wanna get it just right, We're not sure when it's gonna come out but it's gonna be a Killer album when it does ... blah blah blah" ...
JUST PUT THE DAMN THING OUT ALREADY ! sheeesh ... you aren't ever gonna be considered good until you PROVE you are good !

... and that's my 2 cents

I found myself agreeing with Jesse at the start, The Stones have never rated near the top of my pantheon of musical gods. But they are there in my album collection, as are Pink Floyd and Led Zeplelin, albums bought more than twenty years ago, when I was first dicovering music for myself. Now it's just like 10 albums out of several hundred and I rarely get them out. But are they overated? They were great for me at the time I discovered them, but now just a "stepping stone" on my musical journey. They needn't be on someone elses, I don't believe any music is "must listen too", there too much out there to discover you can only listen to your own finds.

Edit: Just noticed todays "Rock Quote" kind of relavent I think:

"Nothing's sacred man" - Bob Dylan

Look, Sinatra was good, Glen Miller and Benny Goodman, Ike Turner, Chubby Checker.

shit, just because you were blown away by a band in your teens does not make THEM the pole star, it just means that they were what was happening at that time in our lives when we identify.

My son has learned hendrix tunes from listening to me play and he digs em...
But they are OLD!
and he's right, they are.

The elevel that modern players are playing at, the dedication they put in to mastering their craft is WAY WAY beyond the era of Zepplin and the Stones.
yes, those band ushered in an era, so to speak, but really...C'mon
evolve already

I get the feeling most of you haven't listened to anything done in the past 5 years..
Jazz is evolving, yea I like Miles...but I like the M Bass scene better! and I like Greg Howe even Better!
Prog Rock had reached a level unimagined in the days of YES and the Moody Blues, DREAM THEATER has taken arrangement and performance to a level that is truly mind boggling.

The Metal Core scene and the Death Metel scene and math metal ..

Even classical has these bright young composers that the stodgy self important old school wont support....it's a tragic, because some of the Brilliant students and young composers of our times are being overlooked so that old gas bags can pack the hall for Strauss or Mozart AGAIN!!!!

Look for the music that challenges your comfort zone!!!!!!

EVOLVE

"and then 35 years from now, some guy will get on the internet and say that THOSE guys are over-rated"

Exactly Sam, I'm aware, which is precisely why I wouldn't waste my time arguing with him. Times change, things evolve.

Contrary to popular belief I'm not arguing facts, there's no rule book saying these bands were/are the greatest there ever was... it's just my OPINION. I'm not saying this is the way it is, I'm simply stating what I like or dislike. People that want to force this crap on me and tell me they're the greatest and that's just the way it is, well that's exactly why I say "fuck that"!

On your other blog Sam one guy wrote that Zeppelin was the greatest band of all time... are you kidding me? That's ridiculous. All you guys have biased opinions of these groups because you grew up loving them and idolizing them. I see them in a neutral aspect, in the entire scheme of music including todays work which is why they pale in comparison... why am I not allowed to do this?

Thanks for that blog by the way Sam you make me sound like some sort of leper. Boy I sure hope I can get the help I need to get well again and see the light. Sheesh. It's this kind of attitude that further solidifies my beliefs. I've always been told my opinion was WRONG.

Never never band- I can tell you're a music teacher. I find your open mindedness and willingness to look forward and challenge yourself musically very refreshing and I respect that very much.

Jesse ! ... sorry if it appeared that way to you ! ... That was not my intention at all ... I don't think you are wrong at all ... I don't think I ever said so ...

I didn't say anything about worshiping any band ... I said I can't believe someone who knows music like you do, and play like you do .. well, it surprised me to read your words that's all ....

It would be like me saying Glenn Miller was over-rated ... There's no way as a musician I could ever say someone that came before my time was over-rated .. I guess I didn't make myself clear ...

I do listen to new bands, and I think some of them WILL be icons ... that doesn't mean that I don't respect the old guys ... even the one's that came before me ... and there will be many more to come after I'm dead and gone ... they will never be over-rated ... I guess I just don't understand the "pit the new stuff against the old guys ... It's all about the LOVE of music ... I don't have to diss anyone to make someone else better ...

Music doesn't evolve necessarily. It changes. Some eras are better than others though. Though 50s rock was big in the days of my grandparents, I'd rather hear that station than contemporary New Country.

Why don't you feel you have the right to form opinions of the bands that came before you? You listen to them the same as anyone else right? If not in better quality because it's all been remastered by now...

I'm not saying I disrespect the classics, I fully appreciate who they are and what they did for music. I'm just saying when people say things like "so and so is the greatest band EVER" well to me that's nuts, and therefor some of these groups get overrated... at least in my world. Who's to say who the best band EVER is, is there even such a thing? Why do we have to make it a competition?

That's all I was saying... actually I was just momentarily ranting about other things I think are overrated aside from the internet which is what started this whole debacle.

It IS all about the love of music, and I listen to all kinds from classical to metal and whatever in between. There's only two kinds of music, good and bad.

Now The Beatles, there's a revolutionary one-of-a-kind band that deserves it's status.

I agree totally ... and I do understand where you are coming from in that respect ...

but I think part of your hostilities about these bands is derived from what people say and not the music itself ... I could be wrong ... but when you make it sound like these old guys didn't work at their craft the way young guys do, and some of your other statements, I think you are being unfair .... These guys worked very hard at their craft too ... they were and in many instances, still are musicians .. Look at their discographies ... They weren't all laying around getting doped up all the time ...
They worked at their crafts just like the "new" guys ...

I think you're absolutely right buddy. I definitely can get over-defensive about certain things.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying the classics weren't hard workers. I know they were otherwise they wouldn't have achieved what they did. I guess I just feel that newer bands are often underappreciated, or dare I say it... underrated? :)
