Facebook, yes or no?
Is it really useful for me as an independent artist, to be on facebook? Or is it just another site, to waste time instead of making music? I mean, I'm on MySpace.com and I don't think that it's much useful... How are your experiences with facebook?

I tend to feel the same, facebook/myspace, just a big mass of data which degrades the internet, and wastes time, although my pal Seana set a myspazz for our "Riverbend" trio, we never used it...
but many users live for their facebook and myspace, so I think one just has to exploit these services to ones own advantage,
If one has time or motivation :)

If you build up a network of genuine friends and fans on facebook and the like it can be a useful addition for publicising events etc. A lot more 'real' people inhabit facebook than do IAC. Sites like IAC are good but often are too international and musician orientated for all needs...

Well, building a fanbase sounds good...but it's definitely not my talent. :-)

Thank you both for your point of view.

For facebook/myspace to be really effective, one must spend a lot of time there. Time that most musicians would rather spend on creation or writing. This is where the wife/ girlfriend/ or supergroupie comes in........
These people Can make a difference and help build up a great fan base!

Me and the wifey both work 40 hrs a week. Niether one of us has time for these other websites. So as of right now no one knows who the hell I am..........
Can Ya Tell?? Hahahahahahahaha!

I have a Facebook fan page but hardly ever go there but my personal Facebook is very popular and I enjoy the interaction with people not in the UK and seeing photos. Myspace is useful but I prefer IAC in every way.

Thanks Duane and Chandra.

I think it is really hard to make a site effective, it needs a lot of work. First it was MySpace, now it's Facebook and may be Twitter...what comes next? :-)

Sometimes Richard, sometimes no could be no, but deep inside, the question remains, should I say yes, sure people say no, but then they waver and really want to say yes, but fear paralyzes them and new things and different ways of doing things makes them step back and go, hell no I wont go......then, after much self deliberation and introspection and analyzing they fall prey to what is needed and that no eventually becomes a yes....No

yes, maybe : )

I think all web presence is good, but I get very little interest in my Facebook music site. Even when I specifically asked friends to check it out, only a handful did.

It couldn't hurt to have, but in my experience, it's not vital.

Yah I hear what you are saying Richard, and I honestly dont really care about FB too much, you can go there and see for yourself by the lack of posts and interaction i have there......I use it to share photo's ,.also promote artists I have contracts with and developing networking in biz and other musicians through my voodoohead productions.

I was kidding around here with my previous post, , I am sure you must of caught that....

but then now with iacmusic hooking up there at FB, it would be of some value for it to be considered more of another way to further your web presence for your music's sake

also I use twitter on occasion, but rarely, most my contacts there are more for the business side as is swift.fm , I also have my voodoohead productions site voodoohead.ca and have received many queries from artists and gained contracts by having that presence , with all of that I also use youtube.com as another way I have promoted artists , so, there you have it, it takes multiple ways and means to get the word out there.......your finger has to be on the many buttons in this day and age

So all, it depends what you are using these mediums for. I use it essentially for biz, music promotions and marketing......not really for my personal music promotion, but that part of has grown over the last while I must admit.

I was having my doubts about facebook but I needed to get in touch with one theatre company (nothing came out of this I'm afraid) and the only way was to create a facebook account so I have. I use it rare but I've found it useful for getting on touch with some of my friends who'd rather check their facebook male then their personal emails! I've found some interesting songs on facebook and I like looking at photos of landscapes posted by my friends who are far away so I can get an idea where they are and how much they enjoy their new places. I think big sites like facebook, twitter, youtube, myspace can be too big for some of us or we can make them smaller by just having connections with our friends, that's what I tend to do anyway.

Myspace is a ghost town at this point. I go back and forth on all these sites. They all have pluses and minuses. For me, Facebook allows easier personal communication w/ friends and family. I try to keep my relationships very specific and don't friend people I don't know. I also helps with networking local gigs, venues, and musicians... this, I like a lot. For a world view, IAC is nice. But locally, Facebook is much more connective.

The Black Orchids

The Black Orchids are not on facebook, but they're just about everywhere else. Useful? That all depends what it is you're after. If it's money you're looking for, forget about it. The internet only cost us musicians, there's never any return.
If you just want to get your music heard, make some contacts ect.....then the internet is ok for that. You need to put your music everywhere you possibly can.

Thanks all for your answers. I think I don't miss something when I'm not on Facebook, but may be I change my mind, some day. Then I'll connect you, if you agree. :)
