to be a musician
how many of us will really make a living out of music... i am 45 now and i have never been able to make ends meet with my music... but the dream never dies... maybe i was born in the wrong place the wrong time... or maybe i am just not good enough... day after day waiting for some thing to happen... at times u lose perspective of what the journey is and where is the goal... i hope i never lose my vision... but like dylan said 'time waits for no one and no one waits for me'... i guess time will take its toll...
Hi... this is not an edit to the original post
i just want u to please read beth fridingers post...at the bottom of the page dont miss it...

Don't agree.... Gotta keep believin', enjoyin', growin', and TRYIN' to make it happen. Don't let AGE stop you. REMEMBER, for example, FRANK ZAPPA? Underground for YEARS and MOSTLY unknown until AFTER 45.
Don't fall for the "waiting for something to happen" and fuckin' MAKE it HAPPEN! You'll only keep getting BETTER, if you TRY!
IF you do "FALL", all you can do is KEEP workin' it, and then when you DIE, KNOW that you didn't give up on your dreams!
What a great way to be a ROLE model to the 20 something generation of musicians, eh? OR for any human being out there, for that matter. Fuck those who say your chance is over---PROVE 'em WRONG!

....I'm over 60 and I only started playing a musical instrument 5 years ago.
I don't think it's a good idea to want to make a living out of creating music. Firstly chase The Vision and The Dollar might, or might not, follow.
Anyway, "making a living" depends on your lifestyle and how much dosh you need to feed it. Rich cats need more.
I don't want much - I just want a lot of it!! [just joking - I'm blessed with most of what I need but I have worked for it]

I feel like a kid- I'm only 46. I've been playing/singing since I was in grade school, and I have yet to make enough money out of it to cover the costs of strings (much less the equipment). However, I doubt that I would ever be able to quit, without a feeling of loss. Personally, there's a sense of freedom that comes with not having to rely on music to pay the bills- it allows me to do (musically) whatever I feel like doing, regardless of market pressures and expectations. I will always be a musician- it's not what I do, it's what I am.

I can't help thinking that the moment someone feels they have to create their music to pay the bills, they lose the soul in their creativity. BUT, we are each different and that's only how I feel - This doesn't apply to everyone.
However, when I recieve money for my music, I love it! Not for the money (I don't really need it) but because the payment represents someone liking my music enough to want to buy it. Yes, it is useful to also offset the costs of professional mastering and CD manufacture etc.
EDIT:- And I won't accept money for gigs if the venue owner is going to start telling me what to play!

These are the usual guys I regularly jam with. All players are welcome and we get all ages - We even let a 16yo lad play the drum kit for a couple of songs last session. Another time the guy (Richard Smith) who developed the electric harmonica (used by Mick Jagger) came and played with us. Most of the guys are in separate bands and regularly gig but we do the jam sessions for free.
The lead guitarist is a good mate of mine and first persuaded me (against my will) to come along. It doesn't matter how good or bad you are, you'll learn how to not care two shits about making mistakes and just enjoy it and make less 'mistakes' as you go on.
I think that what I'm banging on about is that being on a mission to make money out of music can sometimes get in the way.
It's also why I wouldn't want to sell myself out to being told what to do by a record company.

....Yes, I think you would probably be right, Larree, about if I had 'invested' more than 5 of my 60 years - The exact science of hindsight. I should have written "SOMETIMES" in caps. I guess I could now edit it but it might make your point seem a bit unfair.
I think it all comes down to the individual musician's attitude - Do they primarily aim to be a filthy rich major star or a creative musician. Of course, you can be both! Jimmy Page for example. I expect that Bob Dylan is quite wealthy too, and we all know that Sir Paul McBeatle is!
Yep, those monthly jam sessions are always great fun - Forget anything intellectual, just plug in and play it loud and who the fuck cares! A couple of sessions ago I ended up dancing with a very nice young lady for an hour! I'll doubtless get shot down for saying this but I find most folk singers take themselves too seriously - NOT ALL!! just quite a few! Sorry but I'm only generalising and making comparisons and I don't hate folk music. Have I dug myself a deep enough hole yet? :-)

Keep doin' what you're doing because you love it, not because you want to make money from it...Because of the love that you put into your work, people will recognize it and maybe the money will come later. I'm 44 and just started doing music seriously 3 or 4 years ago, but I've been in music some way, shape or form since the 5th grade. I do more behind the scenes with the music and I let the young cats (2mental is 23 and NOBULL is 26) do the "active work" (rap, future shows etc.). Keep doing what you do, get your music out there. CREATE your path, don't follow it. We just got an offer by PurePlayMusic to upload our music for play on their internet radio station. PurePlayMusic is Europe's leading internet radio station and they are opening markets in the US, Canada and France soon. It's a great chance for us to get our music heard. You never know who may be listening to your work, so just keep putting out your music and keep your dreams alive!!!

I like that music has provided more opportunity to meet, share with, and entertain and challenge others. Even if I never make a dollar it doesn't determine how successful I am. I don't write to make money. If I did (write specifically to make money), well I think I would be a sell-out for sure. After all, some of my views aren't the most popular around. Indic Mist's post has turned into a GREAT BLOG! It's all about doing it for LOVE! We can't afford to even pay for a practice space, so we practice in our HOUSE, and drive my family crazy on a regular basis. YOU gotta do it for LOVE, even if your wife & family wants to kill you! =:-)
And Lareee we are just like you, the only recording device for LIVE shit is a crappy condensor mic on a boombox & now a micro-cassette recorder.
BUT you'd be amazed at the COOL shit we get out of that shit!
However, I must say, I LOVE hittin' the studio. 'Cause that's when we get a chance to pull it all together and make it sound how it could IF we had money!
Uh.... that being said, it's only about every 2 years that we've been able to afford to do that. SO the bulk of MY material is LIVE from THE BOOMBOX!
I'll be throwin' more of that stuff up, for LO-FI enjoyment!
BUT to be real, it's the STUDIO recordings that's gotten our songs in the top 20 of HARD ALTERNATIVE and gotten my man Kenny Colgate to sign us on with ROMULUS X Records.
SO like SLIM DOG says --- MAKE your path! And pursue it from as many angles as possible. With solo practice, playing with the pool of musicians in your town, and abroad (HUGH--- I'm taking you up on the OFFER for YOU LOOK FAMILIAR add ons by the marvelous jack of all instruments Hugh Hamilton), practicing with "band members" for however long they stick around, until the next ones come. AND do PLENTY of side projects to keep your chops up, and collaboration skills goin'.
BUT YES-- Live the dream, but ULTIMATELY do it for LOVE! 'Cause nobody knows if the money will ever come, and I like to think that just from SHEER volume of creative material, I'll AT LEAST make some impact after I die. Even if it's just to a small set of friends, fans, other musicians & family members.
It's therapy that keeps me sane in this fucked up world, and fucked up economy, and it allows me to have a VOICE against Corporate & Political power, etc.
I LOVE everything about MUSIC. Even writing these semi-positive BLOGS before I rush off to my day job.

This is a really great topic.
I'm talking in name of SolMusic Management Inc., Canada.
I work in the music industry more of 10 years, and I work also with big artists.
Anyway many of them, they are ROCK STARS but without 1 $. Unfortunately a lot of bands very well known and also with a lot of CD's around the world, they have to do a normal job to stay alive ...to pay the bills.
Music industry is almost full....Doesn't matter which music you play, Pop, Metal, Blues, Country etc...
Its not because a band is famous that it makes money enough to stay alive with their music...
My husband (for to tell an example) is professional guitarist. He went G.I.T in Los Angeles (the most famous guitar school in the world) and he was playing metal with a legendary Canadian band for 12 years.
He left the band last year, he is tired to tour around the world without to make money enough to stay alive. He recorded 8 Cd's in worldwide, but every year it was always the same shit.
Ok to play for love...but anyway if you are a professional musician and you can't live with only music, its because your time over...
Especially in metal music...when you pass 40 years old you have not more time to try and hoping to find a just band living only for music...
Sure for everyone is a dream to become a ROCK STAR or to be professional musician full time...but some time we have to see also the reality.
Anyway I continue working with my music business, because its my full time, and fortunately I work with all kind of music, because only with Metal Music I would be already over...
I wish all the best dreams for your life.

I made a "living" playing music for about 5 years, toured with a band, did western states tour and Colorado ski area tours..
It was exhausting, I never got the "Fuck Yea!" feeling from it, I actually felt like the stressed out school teacher on an endless field trip..
we got to play some pretty big festivals, and a lot of crappy bars and a handful of really great clubs...
I've played solo gigs for years and at one time made maybe 1/2 my income doing solo guitar for the after dinner crowd. I like solo playing but it doesn't really challenge me the way playing a band does..
Now I play occasional solo gigs, occasionally sit in with a local jazz combo and another blues act..
But my big music thrill right now is I teach an afterschool music program for Middle School and High School kids.
the Taos Youth Music School. (TYMS)
we have 25 kids in our Garage Band program and we play Rock, write tunes, have kids who can Really play and kids who can barely play.
It's the greatest, it challenges me to find a way to teach thats not boring and gets the information across as fast as possible so we can get down to playing!
It barely pays (the program is Free and survives off grants and fundraisers)
but it's music!!
really I know a lot of real first rate players, truly top shelf, and only 2 or 3 of them make an actual full time living playing music..
it's tough.
I'm fortunate in that I LOVE my "day job"..so the music feels like paid vacation.

it's intereesting that this has kind of turned into a discussion on playing live, and i think it is pretty evident that the real beauty of music is sharing and interaction, which is probably why places like IAC exist.
yes, it would be nice to earn a living from playing music, but personaly, tho i never achieved this, i lost interest in gigging when the joy of playing became overshadowed by the hassle and prejudices of the music industry, ie when playing - ironically - became like a job.
now, i have reestablished a love for music, tho it is not a strong as perhaps it once was. The thing that satisfies me most about my own music is having people listen and to hear how my music has affected others - one great comment on my page means more to me than many many dollars - that's why i don't feel the need to charge people to hear my music, it's there for people to enjoy...
(and yes, the rest of my album will follow - i do have a day job, you know!)

wow ... what a great response...
i love u all for being so full of words of wisdom... makes one want to carry on regardless of every thing ... i love music... music is my way of life... and the problem is that i dont want to do nothing other than music... so how do i sustain my family... its a catch 22... 'u cant live without it and u cant live with it'... when u hear the demands of the family ... when u hear the screams of the wife... wanting wanting wanting... well one gets a little astray and loses vision...
what does an artist really aspire for???
well according to me it is basically appreciation... the high that one gets when u hear thousands of screaming fans is something that drives one onto a different plane... the high that u get from people trippin on ur music is awesome...
the drift comes when u start making music a way to earn ur livelihood... but like me if u r good at nothing other than music... or dont want to do any thing other than music... it becomes very frustrating .... u lose the real focus
u say make it happen... well thats what one strives for...
well someone said that " if u make one dollar doing what ur passion is it is worth a million dollars earned doing something u do not like"...
so cheers to every one... lets just chill with our own poison and make some great music...

Great topic! Wonderful feedback!!!
I am 43, been playing a lifetime... but only now, in the last few years, really focusing and gigging out. And even though I work from home and everything we do is musically oriented... still don't have the kind of time I want to woodshed or write. But I do the best I can with what I have and when I sit down to write... there's always a song waiting in the wings.
I understand the frustration, but one of the most important things I've learned is this: Disappointment is always connected with expectation and attachment. If you let go of the expectation, there is nothing to disappoint you. Sure, easier said than done... but I honestly don't get the whole jaded musician thing... to me, its the greatest blessing one could have... an outlet for expression!
Music has saved my life over and over again... And as I age, it only grows more and more meaningful. And yeah, it may not pay the rent, but it most definitely makes my living!!!!
Wishing you the best on your journey....

Of course it's good to be paid to play!!
I want to do music for film and start a youth music program that sweeps the nation!
I really do, I just don't know how. I've toured and recorded...
Done the press packs and hired an agent. The best we could get was bare subsistence, my best year playing music was $23,000 Gross. And it was really hard work, a lot of driving a lot of hassle...
I think I started giving my music away for free not because I didn't want to make money, it's just because I still cant figure out how, and I'd rather give it away and at least get friends and compliments and stuff...And I think I still hope that someone is going to say "wow, thats good, thats just what we need for our new film!" or some such nonsense..

I can REALLY relate to Indic Mist's part about FAMILY, and needing money! That's always a very loved thorn in my side. HAVE to take care of the family first---so it's RARE we actually get to go to the studio to record professionally! But I think I'm learning that if you go balls out at work (day job), and try and make time for your family too, and then work hard/passionately & intelligently at your music, your MOST likely to find some recognition & success BEFORE you die!
At least that's my NEW theory! Uh.... that said, I still struggle with being the black sheep in my own family and even get a little flack now & then from my NUCLEAR family for pursuing this crazy, astronomically improbable dream of having a voice & music that is someday heard round the world. A voice helping to empower the REVOLUTION of mankind away from RACISM, NATIONALISM, Classism & OTHER ills of our society.
If nothing else, I get to touch small people groups all over the world, and still be a part of something important, and USE art to express myself in ways that only ART can. Pretty exciting actually, and BEATS the prospect of settling for being a slave/drone all my life. At least I'm creating the illusion (IN HIS HEAD) that I'm following a muse, and infecting the planet with ANTI-Racism, ANTI-WAR & ANTI-nationalism that makes me a part of the potential evolution of this world to a better humanity.... Mmmm... Dellusional as it may be, a few kind comments a week (sometimes a DAY) help make this dream possible. If nothing else, making the act of WORKIN' for the MAN more bearable, because the MAN & my fellow employees know me as PHLEGM too... A subversive who someday will make an impact (IN HIS HEAD). It beats the alternative to embracing a fatalistic existance & simply working as a drone & then dying OR committing suicide, eh? PLUS--- It's a LOT of FUCKIN' FUN, and helps keep ME sane!

It all depends on what one's perspective is, regarding what you consider "making a living"
... I don't have much besides my guitars and harmonicas ... but I have not had a job for over six years now ...
My freedom is much more important to me than any toy I could buy from having a job ... and I play music when and where I want ... so I guess I call that livin' ... Someday I may join the Rat Race again ... but then again ... maybe not ... :)

freedom is just another word for nothing left to lose... when we have no more to lose we r free... but the music is always there to lift us into the highest flight... nothing to compare... the moment of bliss is in the creation... after that i guess it turns into a lesser form... when we try to sell it... the business of music... its a different ball game all together... i have people laugh at me that i am not good enuff for the new world of hi tech selling... well i love my moments of bliss... they will never go... each tune is a new baby... so lets all populate this world with our children of soul...

The main reason i'd like to make money is for the opportunities it would bring to get my music recorded really well...Have access to the best equipment, a great engineer, brilliant musicians etc..
Have the power to get the songs done as i really want them...
NOT have to do everything myself...
All the other stuff that necessarily goes with being an artist who's in a position to make a living from singing their own songs i don't crave at all tho- and infact brings out alot of fear...
So therefore i make no psychic or real effort to 'create' that situation
I think you've gotta really REALLY 'want it' to become succesful....
The 'age' part is a handicap 'cos its a message constantly given out by the media and the industry...If you personally didn't buy into that belief system at all,it probarbly wouldn't be a problem preventing success-i really believe we create our own reality...
Talent is such a very small part of the equation compared to desire...........
Which is (of course) a shame 'cos its so often the people with mediocre talent but ruthless drive and relentless self-belief who 'make it'
A cursory listen to pop radio today bares that out i think..

Well I sang in a band, we packed the house and the bar ran out of food, and I made $10 (10 of us in the band) then I sold 5 songs and made $4....in a year! Ha ha...I am preparing myself to go out in the street with an amp and play out there with guitar case open and some CDs for sale and see if I do any better than that! I think this will be great for developing my performance skills, which are pretty darn good...so far...but to get more comfortable performing....I started LATE at this.... LOL....I just posted an album up on CD Baby also...and songs will be available in ITunes through Tunecore if they aren't already up....we'll see if anybody buys them....It's hard to sell stuff on line...but at least we can get our music out there these days!!

lost hope and faith
lost the way
where does it take us all

I used to play clubs for a living working my way through grad school. Had an offer to be *promoted and tour* but turned it down for what I do now. I have to admit when it became my *job* I loved it less. After my career started I continued to play out for the next 16 years and loved it more.

I sing through my pain
never have nothing to gain
I look for the love
that will raise me above
the mere objects of desire
I wanna go a little higher
and hear the voice
of my very soul
music is my soul.......

Oh peace can it bring
To this tortured soul
Seeker of truth tries to mould
A meaningful life
For my very soul
Music is my soul
Music is my soul
