Hittin’ The Note Magazine Review
Current mood: accomplished

Hittn' The Note
By : Ron Curens
Red-haired chanteuse Ruby James is something really special—smooth, sweet, sultry and sexy. Her voice is as hypnotic as the purr of a Corvette cruising down Route 66. Statuesque and beautiful, Ruby brings it on.
In Desert Rose, Ruby has released one of the finest debut albums I've heard. If you like soaring vocals, brilliant song-writing, tasty guitar, and sweet slide licks, then this is the album for you. Ruby's first album is so close to perfect the difference doesn't matter.
With all but one song co-written by Ruby, she has immediately established herself as a force to be reckoned. The only thing better than listening to Desert Rose is seeing her live.
This whole album is a journey, and "The Words Goodbye"—a song about moving through whatever life throws your way—sets the tone. "Everything Good Goes Away" is a dark and moody song that profoundly shows you can't experience the highs in life without knowing the lows. The title track, "Desert Rose," represents the feeling of longing and salvation and is my favorite cut on the record.
"Passengers" is a song about a journey where you feel you have no control and just take the ride. "Mistress of the Devil" is a multi-toned palette of the blues, while "Suicidal Serenade" is an upbeat pop song with a twist on depression.
<>This album has a lot of heartache, heartbreak, and pain, but also has a very bright shining light that serves as a guide towards a bright future—as bright of that as Ruby James herself.
