Check out Mama Tilly - new artist on IAC community!!
Forget the old music industry adages. Wellington-based Mama Tilly is sophistication, feminine and wild with two fingers up to conformity, definitely NOT your garden variety all-chick gig. Gorgeous and gifted though they may be, this is an ensemble that knows how to do away with clichés - and how to put in the hard yards.
Founding band members Lisa Tagaloa (Bass & Vocals), Lauren King (Guitar), and Georgina Swan-Hay (Drums) studied together at Wellington’s acclaimed Whitireia Music School. Lisa met Singer/songwriter Mahinarangi Maika (Vocals) at a ‘Making it in Music’ seminar and New Zealand School of Music graduate Ila Scott (Keys & Vocals) joined the band in 2009, consolidating the synergy of raw emotion that is Mama Tilly.
Each brings their unique ‘voice’ to the fray, expanding on a sound borne from the talents, influences and cultural flavours of five strikingly diverse women. Fusing lush vocal harmonies with soundscapes ranging from tender blues and raucous punk to swinging jazz and reggae grooves, good luck trying to pigeon hole Mama Tilly into one set style; “Music is the soul of what we do and the reason we connected. It just so happens that we communicate to the world using every genre imaginable.” Whatever your expectations, seeing them live is a truly genuine and heartfelt experience.
Bucking the trend in every way, a typical ‘girl band’ these women are not. Having released their debut EP Silhouettes & Footsteps (recorded at Matrix Digital Studio in Wellington) Mama Tilly is without a doubt a band on the rise and with their determination, talent and drive, fate almost certainly has some big things a-brewing.
Our songs listed on IAC are 'Screaming Smiley' and 'Poker has the Luck' come and have a listen on our page! We are always keen to hear from other musicians.
Peace and Love MT xx
