Who is the most versatile artist ever ?
I mean an artist, band or writer who has been successful with many different genres.

It might be that guy Mr indie that used to have all that music here. He wrote all kinds of cool songs, was in different bands and they were all good. He was a lyricist and he was into rock.

Define "successful."

I see what you mean, "successful" is subjective I guess. I was thinking of someone like Paul Simon (went to his 'Final Tour' show recently) so eclectic, hard to pin him down to one genre. Plus he's changed and developed new styles over the years.

How about The Beatles, who not only changed styles over the years, but also invented and evolved them?

Of course, The Beatles would head practically every list. Probably Queen too, especially with the Spanish Classical songs, the grand anthems and the show tunes.

So I think this thread is void now.

I would go with Kenny Edmonds aka Babyface and Here's why: he wrote and produced top hit songs for Bobby Brown, Karyn White, Pebbles, Paula Abdul, Michael Jackson Sheena Easton, Toni Braxton, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Carole King, Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Janet Jackson, Faith Evans, Al Green, Beyoncé, Diana Ross, Toni Braxton, Michael Bolton, Eric Clapton, Pebbles, Tevin Campbell, Brandy, Mary J. Blige, Tamia, Shola Ama, 3T, Sisqó, Dru Hill, Fall Out Boy, Céline Dion, Samantha Jade, Backstreet Boys, Honeyz, Katharine McPhee, Mariah Carey, Vanessa L. Williams, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson, Chanté Moore, En Vogue, Zendaya, Kenny G, Kristinia DeBarge, Lil Wayne, Japanese singer Ken Hirai, P!nk, Colbie Caillat, Marc Nelson, TLC, Ariana Grande, Ella Henderson, Jessica Mauboy, Xscape, K-Ci & JoJo, NSYNC, Jordin Sparks, Prince and Phil Collins. He was nominated for 51 Grammy's and has won 11 in 6 music categories. IMO, the most versatile artist in the past 25 years. Need I say anymore? There is a whole lot more but I will leave it here as his credits would take hours to list here. Don't have that kind of time but i will say that he is probably the most underrated artist of our time. But history will show that he is a living legend.

Reading Stoneman's nomination reminded me of an English man who is probably not well known but has achieved an amazing variety of goals in the music business, he is Mike Batt. Probably he's only known for writing Bright Eyes and music for the Wombles (kids show) but that is the tip of the iceberg.

He's a singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, director, conductor of many great Orchestras in both classical and pop. He's written film scores and music for Royal/State occasions plus football anthems and worked on big musicals. He discovered and managed new talent and wrote and worked with established artists - the list is too long to write.

He served on the boards of many industry organisations and he's won several awards. Sadly, last year at age 68 it is said he filed for bankruptcy. Presently he's working with Hawkwind and Eric Clapton on a 70s covers album just like the first stuff he ever did. So, this guy did full circle, reached the highs and touched the lows but gained immense respect in the business.

Definitely Jerry Garcia. He played almost every genre; folk, bluegrass, blues, rock, psychedelic rock, jazz, Latin music, world music, and more. Can't touch Jerry when it comes to versatility.

Prince, he could play every instrument in the band and could sing five octaves. That's very versatile I think.

As a songwriter I'd have to go with McCartney, Honey Pie is one of my favorites. Show me any writer who could pull this off.
