What is Music exactly?
Even though we are constantly exposed to music in some form, do we really know what it is?
1. The quick answer
A form of entertainment that puts sounds together in a way that people like or find interesting.
2. The Technical explanation
"The common elements of music are pitch (melody and harmony), rhythm (tempo, meter, and articulation) dynamics (loudness and softness), and the sonic qualities of timbre and texture"
3. A slightly more aesthetic explanation
"Vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion"
4. The therapeutic response
Music is a constant companion. It can bring us joy, motivate us, accompany us through difficult times, and alleviate our worries.
5. The Spiritual explanation
Music is sonorous air, a simple vibration unseen by the human eye can facilitate a deeply rich emotional experience, alter perception and consciousness, and induce ecstatic states of being and creating a profound psychological experience for the listener.
OK, which one describes your music or do you have an alternative definition?
PS - If anyone can honestly identify their music as number 5, please leave a link below, I'd love to hear it.

hi Stella , cool post, thanks, interesting thoughts, on number 5.
I think there is a spirit essence within us, maybe to obvious an answer, although I believe there is an element of a god particle we have been endowed with. that lives inside us, and this human thing, shroud , the soul we inhabit as the body is our dwelling place. So Stella, i think we tap into a cosmic energy that can ignite that creative quality some of us humans have been blessed with in the musical form. others do art and paintings ,still others invent things. some build, we are creative beings so we invent create devise and make.
Music is a reflection of who we are..........but one part. We are complicated creatures. the pathos that drive us shimmer like waters, or stir up like the angry seas or bring breezes of love to others through the music we create.
"Truth or lies is in the music we write.music is likened to the reflections of mankind's spirit whether it is bright or dark. The music we make sends out its signal,a message, and it ripples like the water on a lake as a breeze fills the air, shimmering or even raging on the mighty seas. Music comes from our soul and washes through humanity and any who will listen. Music is the soul spirit & heart of mankind. Music is Truth"
Cheers and thank you for your blog. I have to go. I am sure some will post their music here.

Ok, I accept the challenge to #5 I write mostly instrumentals and have done a lot of them
I feel there is a spiritual essence to the music i compose and draw from the piano tones colors and elements of experimenting with unusual sounds , its not for every one, have a few fans that follow me in this ambient and classical vibe
experimental ambient conceptual improvisational
THE GOD PARTICLE
classical song with structure
THE GIFT OF LIFE
introspective experimental improvisational
THE SILK ROAD
I just randomly picked these. I have lots of piano pieces , and many i have performed live and some are on CD and some have been featured on terrestrial radio
cheers and thanks for your post. you provide insightful valuable ones

music is a universal language, its very closely related to maths because its made of formula's eg the scales, the frequency, tempo, intervals its all math based but in a communicational art form that is universal so the rules remain same anywhere.
the scales are like the alphabet of what is said, the chords are the words, and the lyrics are the language. the instrument is the communication medium, and the listener is the receiver of the frequency.
dolphins sonar waves are a form of music, wales sing to each other,
music therapists use music to improve kids communication and awareness skills,
morse code also a form of music and communication,
mobile phone frequency waves, a form of music,
might even be able to use music to communicate to spirits
anything with a set frequency and a pattern could be classed as music

Just wanted to point out that my initial definitions were merely googled, copied and pasted by me as a guideline, not my own work. Now I have read some of your own great definitions I realize I should have simply asked the question. Thank you

I would say after love, language, math, science somewhere in the mix... one of the greatest things mankind has created... So many forms and languages/genres within itself it reaches out and unites us all. Like a voice to and for all.
One of the most powerful things we possess.... indeed.

Going back to primitive sounds (drums and vocal, I'm assuming) before mechanical instruments anyway .. I have always thought the sound of music is the call that humans make - like bird songs or other animal sounds. And I agree with Lee Burke about the relationship to Math (which I think was considered an art by the Ancient Greeks). So since our brains just work that way, our call has developed into all the forms of music that exist now. That fascinates me and makes me love who we are as a species.

like i said before , there is a Spirit Essence within us , a God Particle, if not that a Cosmic particle that transforms our physical energy into music, we tap into something that is part of us and also part of the greater good or evil and create. All humans have a special gift, we all have to dig deep and find that which reflects who we are, music art education designing things ,building, we all have talents. but we music develop those in to skills.
So for me, it is a total spiritual thing. good or evil. as humans can be also. so it is with music, how it evolves and develops, the influences.
Music is truth, or lies.

Music is an album by Carole King.
Totally coincidentally I put out a cover song from that album today called Surely. It's lo-fi for sure but has high emotional content, in other words it's soulful.

So Bryon - going back to your comment - a couple of comments ago. I totally agree with that - I'm just saying how much I love how organic our sounds are. Like when you listen to accapella choir music and all the sound is just what our bodies produce. What we do with them is pure spirit. And as humans, we are so lucky to be recipient of the sounds that come to us as songs so we can express what is happening to us with music. Sometimes the sounds even come to us that are outside of our own personal experience. I heard Tom Petty refer to it as listening to the Cosmic Radio in an interview a while back - a total journey of the spirit to be receptive to that.

Just wonder if we're all getting a little carried away with the Godlike qualities we attribute to music. Sure, some music is sheer nectar, uplifting and healing, reaching Nirvana, I concur with all that ; but some music is absolutely soulless, it leaves us cold, it grates on our nerves, it's bland and tuneless, flat, piercing, predictable crapola and we can't wait for it to stop! Should there be another word other than "Music" for such sounds.

That music you call "bland and tuneless, flat, piercing, predictable crapola" just might be the equivalent of Beethoven's 9th to someone else.

Well memorie laine that is how some of us feel, I just made a comment that some music is God like, from a spirit essence ,now it could be devil like, satan like, demon like, so that is the way it is, now being dismissive like that with your statement is actually not helping. and that is how it is coming across, we can say what we want , , you think how you want, but dont preach at us about getting carried away. some of us are like that, you may be different. ok if I want to say that is how I feel, thats it.

Some music doesn't even qualify to be Demonic, if it was at least it would have some character and draw out some emotions but you can't throw a blanket over everything classed as music being worthy of the name imo

There are many fantastic answers here. But for me Lee Burkes came closest to what I believe. For me music is a form of communication. The purest form because it is set to the tempo of my emotions and that becomes my spiritual watermark on it. But really enjoyed reading these. Great Posts!
Much Respect,

I think I dealt more on the inspiration, what inspires us, or motivates, obviously it is a form of language and communication. that is something that the great thinkers and writers of the past have brought forth many times .
one in particular stands out
"Music is the universal language of mankind."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Wadsworth_Longfellow
If a composer could say what he had to say in words he would not bother trying to say it in music. ~Gustav Mahler
There's music in the sighing of a reed;
There's music in the gushing of a rill;
There's music in all things, if men had ears:
Their earth is but an echo of the spheres.
~Lord Byron
There is nothing in the world so much like prayer as music is. ~William P. Merrill

About the closest I ever came to #5 was my cover or sound of silence which if you listen to it your experience of the performance might leave you forever changed or you might turn it off after 20 seconds like most people do. Listen and decide for yourself.
