Of Two Choices or the Problem of Sin

A cross road stands before you, there is a sign post clearly marked giving directions. To the right lays a most pleasant path, offering the fulfillment of your strongest desires. To the left lays a path rather plain and wanting for ware, it seems to be seldom traveled and by the look it promises difficulty. Upon examining the sign more closely it is noticed that the two paths lead to very differant places. Above the sign pointing to the left reads the words, “Easy St” and the arrow pointing to the right, reads the words, “Eternal Life”. Which way should one choose?

Suddenly struck with the desire to take the road to the right a voice is heard, “Surly the road to Easy St is the road for you. Think of the time you could spend pursuing your own interest. All the things you would like to accomplish could find fulfillment on Easy St. The road to Eternal Life could hardly afford you the time to any enterprise, being so overgrown and unpleasant to look upon.” This train of though seems reasonable and it is only too true that one has only one life in which to live.

However, another voice is heard. “The way to the right brings you back to your home. Yes, you must travel as a foreigner in this country but at the journeys end will it not be worth the alienation?” This train of thought strikes a deeply felt chord within but ever so faint. The idea being known with you to be right is quickly overcome with a seemingly more rational thought that points out all the problems associated with the road to the right. It is true that the way is unpleasant and all ones efforts will be consumed in the traversing. What would come of all those hopes and dreams held so dearly? The road to Eternal Life would mean the relinquishing of such and then one might never be held in esteem by anyone. Such is the conversation while stuck at the crossroads between two choices.
