A work tape of a new song
Because it's not yet ready for prime time, but I would still like some thoughts on it, I am posting this here instead of on my page.
"You Wrote This Song"
I'm going to record it with a full band in mid-December. Just curious as to your thoughts on it as it stands.
I'm having a wonderful female singer take the lead on this, but at the same time, I am thinking that this is more a guy-lead kinda song. Might do 2 versions, if I have time.

Promising song! I especially like the chorus and I think the female singer will make the song come together as it should. The more twang she has in her voice, the more country it will sound. It's a tricky genre to master without an authentic country singer but you're off to a good start.

I dig rough tapes, mon. This is a good song. I would be tempted, if it were my song, to write a middle eight with a couple fancy chords in it. You know,a section that only happened once:
Here comes the middle eight
Because you made me feel great
And you gave me the gift
That makes the melody lift
Just kidding around with the lyrics. Something I was hearing in my head, a climbing up thing. Ha! Actually just a middle four there.
I think you are the singer for this song.

Well, I have a middle 8, but I am still playing with it a bit.
And, as far as me being the singer: I think that, were I not pitching it to the folks in Nashville, my less-than-perfect voice would be just fine. But, as this is going to be something that I want to get produced, I think that it needs someone who can stay on-pitch ALL of the time, and still get the emotion into it.

I think it's bullshit that you can't sing this song. Utterly. You sing it great. Just wait for your favorite take. It's made for you. You wrote this song.
Nashville can kiss your ass if they can't hear it, huh?
Oh wait, I think you're saying you have a middle 8 but it's not on this tape?
Anyway, you wrote it and you sing it. You got a good country voice. What a hook, man.

The middle 8 is at the key change.

Maybe it is a "middle 4"; I don't bother counting, I just go with what feels right to me.

Yes it's got a good catchy feel and I like your singing on it - maybe a female harmony in places. It does have a bit of a Wilburys feel - the mood/Orbisonish. Nice piano work.

I am no expert on this genre but the musical arrangements (song form) seem perfect to me. I think this song has great potential. I like the lyrics and the whole concept about the writing of the song. Great idea! I also like the idea of having two versions (male & female) for this song as it will not only give the song two different emotional feels but will improve its marketability. Looking forward to hearing the full band version!

She's got a really nice voice Todd..
Looking forward to hearing you sing it..Its a cool song f'sure..
The harmonies are great when they come in on the chorus-tho i reckon you could have them coming in earlier too :)
Would love to hear this song with a really stripped down version like the demo too- really starring the piano -with real strings maybe..

Great man! Don't see how that can't get you hired.
But I'd still like a version of you singing it, and also I think the yoooooooooouuuuu had a bar or two left to go before she sings "wrote this song". I mean, she's just sailing along on that note and could keep going about two more bars. I expected her to every time.
Either way, this should get their attention in Nashville if the world has any justice.
But I've not seen indication the world necessarily has justice.

Funny you mention letting that note going on longer, because when I was rehearsing it and singing it myself, I did hold that high note for a couple more bars... at least the last time that it came up... for dramatic effect.
But, at the suggestion of the guitar player, we didn't do that at all because of the type of recording this is -- a demo. Apparently, the powers that be want to hear the song, get in and get out because they don't have a lot of time to listen to anything too long. We sped up the tempo a bit for that reason, too.
But thank you and Steve for the kind words. Looking forward to hearing what you think of the male vocal version, too. (It's sung by Rachel's father who has a definite Roy Orbison/Elvis thing going on.)

Well, I'm not actually waiting for the male version so much as the Todd version.
The held note just sounds like where the song is headed, and ending it early just seems, we'll, early. I probably picked it up off of your version.

Not sure when your'e gonna get a Todd version, but here is the male version, if you are interested. I like it and Jack is a far better singer than I. But thanks so much the vote of confidence.
Again, it came down to the situation—pitching it to Nashville folks who want to hear the song with an actual singer.

Actually the same exact backing track, but with Jack's voice instead of Rachel's.

I like this piece of work Todd. the true country flair gives it that good old vibe from the past, but not too old , as for Nashville, maybe they are headed in the right direction these days, ,they went off track for many years straying away from the "real" country sounds that folk got used to, and deviated to pop country, or even pop rock, taht is why so many rock artists went down that path, and countrified their sound and called it country, so it is tough to break that market. but country really is where it is at for doing well if you get someone interested. pitching it to the right artist that is willing to take a chance or label.
Continue to produce it and then release it as an indie is your best shot, then getting someone to get it on radio, and perhaps someone to help cover it and then you are on your way, get in touch with me once you have a finished product Todd and I will also send you a lady who has a pretty big country radio syndicated program who may consider your song for her show. I have had a few I have pitched to, in the Americana and Country genre that she features as break out artists, or new artists
i like what Bob suggested though. i think he is on the mark, but you are going in the right direction, its good and keep developing it on your own, do your own release as a single,then get in touch with me and i will do what I can to help you get it out there,

Yeah, I think Voodoohead is right about how country music is an easier market to get into right now, but if you're going to go country, you've got to embrace that whole culture, because that's what country music is - a culture. I, personally don't see you as being part of that culture, and you should never, IMHO, become an "Act." Always remain a person first and be ready to show the world who that person is.
By the way, I can't wait to hear the transformation of this piece into a finished song.

Yah, Tom I sent a private email to Todd expanding upon what I said on that song and did say how it really takes being there and immersing yourself in the whole thing and living breathing eating the scene. indeed, in is a culture thing.. I know, my brother went down there with a bunch of songs and recorded there many years ago with some of the best talent at that time. he actually had some good country tunes with a top notch country singer with fine success here in Canada and did very well, but not so much in Nashville and the country market stateside

It comes down to resources: both time and money. I have pretty much nothing of either.
Also, the more I listen, the more I think that this could be either a Country or an RnB song -- just add horns and the right kind of singer/arrangement.
This is a demonstration of the song and I want producers, etc. to be able to hear their own vision of the song within the recording, not to have mine imposed upon them.
So, between A and B, I think that the recording kinda needs to stay as it is.
If you want to cover it, well... that's the whole point! I think that the recording is doing its job.
I hope that it will do that with the big shots.

Again, if you know anybody in music in Nashville, that would be very helpful.
Bryon -- your advise was extremely helpful. And, if your friend knows anyone that I can send it to who CAN produce it for radio, I would love it if I could get a name or a forward or something.
The more I listen to the song, the more it sounds like a potential hit to me.
(Yes, with the emphasis on potential until it gets into the right hands.)

I will ask my contact and see what she says. I know she is quite the writer singer herself and deep into radio in the various country genre and has as you know programming for gospel country styles, straight ahead, old country and western, new country and true country as well as Americana, I have many artists get on her syndicated program as well as many others in that genre who seek my services to get their vibe out there
