NEW SONG: "INSIDE THE OUTLANDS"
INSIDE THE OUTLANDS
INSIDE THE OUTLANDS
AT THE EDGE OF NOWHERE BETWEEN LOSS AND REGRET
I FEEL ABANDONED AND I JUST CAN'T FORGET
WHAT I WAS LIKE WHEN I WAS PROUD
NOW DARKNESS COVERS ME LIKE A SHROUD
INSIDE THE OUTLANDS THINGS ARE CHANGING FAST
I'M TREATED LIKE AN OUTLAW
AND I FEEL LIKE SOME OUTCAST
BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I CAN LAST
NOW I'M AT THE CROSSROADS AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT
I'VE LOST MY DIRECTION AND I'M FILLED WITH DOUBT
MY VISION IS FADING AND I CAN BARELY SEE
I FEEL UPROOTED LIKE A DYING TREE
INSIDE THE OUTLANDS THINGS ARE CHANGING FAST
I'M TREATED LIKE AN OUTLAW
AND I FEEL LIKE SOME OUTCAST
BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I CAN LAST
CRIMINALS KIDNAPPED MY SOUL,
HELD ME HOSTAGE AND RIPPED OFF MY ROCK AND ROLL,
I CAN'T FORGIVE THEM BUT I MUST MOVE ON
MEMORIES CAN'T HURT YOU WHEN THEY'RE GONE
MY DREAMS HAVE SHATTERED LIKE BROKEN GLASS
ALL THE THINGS I WORKED FOR HAVEN'T COME TO PASS
I'M SO TIRED I JUST WANT TO CLOSE MY EYES
AND NEVER WAKE UP TO SEE THE SUNRISE
INSIDE THE OUTLANDS THINGS ARE CHANGING FAST
I'M TREATED LIKE AN OUTLAW
AND I FEEL LIKE SOME OUTCAST
BUT I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG I CAN LAST

Great song structure and outstanding lyrics. I especially liked the vamp at the end with the harmonica. Very Cool!

Thank you so much, Stoneman. I put a lot of effort into the vamp because I felt the song needed to go out with a bang. It's great when listeners like yourself recognize the results of my labors. I felt very inspired to wail on a harp at the end of the song and I was praying that I had a harmonica in the key of "C" at that moment because I knew that I was ready to rock out and didn't want the moment to pass. I went rummaging through every harp I had and after much searching I finally found a 'C" harp. I just played what I felt without any conscious thought. I did several more takes but none of them were as good as that first magic take which is the one I ended up using when mixing. It reminded me about the importance of spontaneity and inspiration, not to mention the sheer thrill of sifting for gold and seeing something glitter in the sifting pan.

I love those clean, chiming guitar chords in the intro. The lyrics are pretty solid, and Nick's growl, which is kind of in between Tom Waits and Bob Dylan, helps them along nicely. I think the melody is a little predictable, though. It could have more variation. I liked the outro, too. The harp is a nice touch.

I think it's a very decent song, Richard. Well structured.
I don't think your vocalist did for you what the song deserved. He was particularly clumsy on the last line of the chorus. To me, he didn't sound like he was convinced or even really knew what he was singing. That's not your fault, though. With a different vocal, this could have been a much much better track. It has that potential.

Thank you, Dan for those insightful comments. Time was tight for this one but I'm always open to revisiting songs when time and conditions permit. I've been known to tweak songs years after the fact!!

I love this song Richard. Since the moment you sent it to me I loaded it and it has been in rotation ever since. Its like you are in my head my friend...it has such a dark message yet leaves you hopeful and pumped!!! Well crafted.
