Tribe of Doris
I'm just back from an amazing week away in my live in van with Peter at the Tribe of Doris intercultural summer school on the Somerset/Devon borders.
It was the last ever one after nearly 20 years the organisers are tired and calling it a day.
It was where I first heard about sabar drumming back in 2004, got together three years ago with my lovely man, was turned on to so many extraordinary experiences.
It's not really a festival as the focus is on dipping into and learning new things from other cultures, trying things out, pushing your own boundaries. This time I did the middle eastern workshops with my flute and had to perform a short solo to kick off on the last night in front of about a thousand people which was nerve wracking but went well - the scales (maqams) are fascinating and completely different. I also did sabar drumming daily and a had a go in the open mic accompanied by a lovely guitarist and a bodran player - I did three of my own songs. There was wild dancing and some wonderful performances, healing sessions and seeing old friends.
Oh I'll miss it but time to move on.
