The "B" List
We have done the "A" list of favorite bands/artists several times. You know? Groups like the Beatles, The Stones, Earth Wind & Fire, Temptations etc. But we all have a "B" list of favorites. They are the bands that we love but did not quite make the "A" list because it would make the list too long. So, here is a list of my 25 top "B" list groups. They are in the order of remembrance and not necessarily of importance. Most of you probably won't even recognize these groups because I'm old and I like old shit. (smile) Would love to see your list though!

Much Respect!

Wow, you have several folks on your list that I had completely forgotten. In particular are Ben E. King, Teddy Pendergrass and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers.

Great List!

The Band and The Byrds!!! Right on! Good candidates for my "A" list but this kind of thing is so hard to quantify and it has much to do with how one feels at the time these acts were at their peak. I used to live and breathe for The Band and they have had a tremendous influence on my life and song writing. Garth Hudson's organ playing was also a big influence on my hammond organ playing. It's a shame they didn't stay together longer but I rarely if ever listen to them now. I loved the Byrds too when they were flying 8 miles high but they aren't on my radar screen now. I guess I'd have to stipulate some acts burn brightly ('A' list at their peak) ) and then burn out (slide into "B" list) but it doesn't diminish their greatness or their influence. Acts like the Beatles and Stones seem to just stay on most folk's "A" list forever. Nonetheless it's an honor for other acts to be important footnotes in history. Only a rarified bunch are timeless but in the end, thee are no A's and B's. just great work that lives forever.

too true. The Band I still listen to a lot, not just Music from the Big Pink but also their earlier boogie stuff eg Moondog Matinee. It's good time music and a lot can also be learnt from listening to their songwriting, arrangements and playing. I think this is the best way to improve songwriting - just listen to the great acts a hell of a lot, such as the ones mentioned in this thread, and you can't go wrong :)

I didn't get to do an 'A' list - so parden me if a few A ones creep into the B list here lol

Love (Just for Da Capo and Forever Changes -They'd go on an A B and C list)
Syd Barrett (2 great solo albums n his songs on the 1st Pink Floyd album are ace)
Dusty Springfield (best female voice ever..I Close My Eyes and Count To 10 =sublime)
The Supremes (Diana Ross-One of the greatest pop voices ever -with Holland Dozier Holland songs at their peak)
ELO (for 10538 Overture and Living Thing mainly)
Roy Harper (60s stuff..A rare gem ..Folk with punky attack..Great lyrics, transcendent tunes))
The Incredible String Band (Quirky n incredibly inventive n magical)
Kate Bush (Could Wuthering Heights be the greatest song ever ? )
The Four Tops (Magical HDH songs again..Levi Stubbs intensely ace vocalist )
The Four Seasons (One of the most critically underated bands ever ? Brilliant inventive songwriting )
The Shangri-Las (Adult themed teenage music..The heartbeat of the beautiful spirit of pop)
Irma Thomas (Such a beautiful voice..Intensely soulful songs)
The Specials (Experimental-brilliant..Jerry Dammers was a great songwriter)
The Jam (Paul Wellers ballads n 60s influenced songs are sooo cool)
Blondie (Equal best female pop vocalist ever with Diana Ross...Wonderful pop songs)
The Police (Roxanne,Message In A Bottle,Can't Stand Losing You about as good as music gets for me)
Big Star (beautifully soulful pop idealists)
Siouxsie And The Banshees (killer early singles-totally original sound)
The Byrds (as Richard says when they were flying 8 miles High..2 or 3 impeccable psych pop albums)
