A new sound experiment
Have a listen to this acoustic guitar piece I wrote. It's got one guitar doing a beat in straight 4, and then a melody line of 5 notes in each measure and then another guitar playing a 6 note melody over that. Does that make sense? So each measure has a 4 beat a 5 beat and a 6 beat happening at the same time. It's kind of a trip.

.....too much tripping and not enough writing. The song is repetitive and meanders without direction. It has one nice riff, but you're capable of better. Not every heady jam spawned in the wee hours sounds as inspired in the morning. As always I commend your efforts to take risks.

Yeah, lots of timing issues that sound like little hicups. However, I admire the fact that you took some risks and did some sonic exploration/experimentation. I do that a lot myself but I don't allow everyone to hear most of it. I don't have the guts that you have. This is not your best work according to the standards I am use to from you. But it is a very interesting detour from the norm. I am sure we all do that from time to time.

Yeah, you guys are right - maybe I should keep these experiments to myself. But I just wanted to gauge some reactions. They've been mixed so far. Maybe this kind of rhythm will show up in a song some day. It's been too long since I wrote a straight song. Well, actually, I wrote one a few weeks ago, but it was kind of like a country song, which is an area totally foreign to me, except for Hank Williams and Willie Nelson, both of whom I admire. Maybe I'll post it for kicks. It's got a good lyric.

I can relate to that. I have been dying to write a country song for many years. I just don't think I can do it any justice because I have no twang in my voice. But I have toyed with the idea of writing and producing a country song but finding someone with authentic country chops to sing it. It's one of those things on my bucket list. Keep experimenting Tom. You never know what kind of gem may come out of it.

I agree with both the compliments and the critiques. Personally, I found this a pretty interesting listen and I would listen again. Not sure how often, but I would come back to this and listen again. Definitely.
I did something kinda similar, but with the drums. Thought that I posted it here once upon a time, but it's not here anymore.

I built the drum part in rounds, but did it entirely in ProTools, using an organically recorded drum that was looped and sampled onto other tracks.
Not trying to hijack the thread, Tom, I just thought that you might find this an interesting recording, kinda related to what you did.
But I like what you did. And, if you could build upon the arrangement, it could be something even cooler. Or maybe use the same concept in something else, even?

Yeah, Todd, I think using this concept to base a more fully-fleshed song is a good idea. It's a new way to think about timing. We are so used to even divisions.
