A Musician You Should Check Out
I was listening to a Zombies record on Spotify, and after it they played something by Big Star and then something by Emitt Rhodes. I'd never heard of him. But the song was so likable that I wanted more. So I listened to his 1970 debut, and I was kinda floored. Every aspect was above average - songwriting, lyrics, performance, production, and a beautiful voice on top of it all. So, in reading about him I learned that he played every instrument and did every vocal himself, and he recorded the whole album in a studio he built in his parents' garage! Sound familiar anyone? Apparently there is a documentary about him called "The One Man Beatles." He got sued after not being able to meet his record company's contract demands (an album every 6 months for 3 years!) and I think that derailed his career.
I don't know when was the last time I got this excited about a new musical find, but you should check him out. Unfortunately, he died about 4 years ago, age 70.

I checked it out. I listened to about 2/3 of the 4 album collection I found and then listened to the final album. Did a bit of light reading (Wikipedia, I admit). Interesting stuff, never heard of this gent before. I don’t think I liked it as much as you did, but still always fun to check out something different. For some reason I switched to listening to Atomic Rooster (!) for a bit, then realized that Captain Beyond was the correct answer.
