I just want to write an "Under the Boardwalk"
I once ran into a guy who said he lived next door to the guy who penned that classic. Whoever it was (I'm sure someone will look it up) apparently lived off the royalties for that song alone, or at least, so the story went.
That's all I really want - to write a tune (I don't care who has the hit with it) that gets into the public's mind like "Under the Boardwalk" does. You say it, and you instantly can sing it. Anyone, no matter how musical, knows it and knows how it goes. It's part of the culture. That's all I want.
And living off royalties wouldn't be a bad thing either.

Sounds simple, doesn't it Tom? But that's the beauty of great tunes (or performances or accomplishments).. that someone who's really good can make it seem easy.
Nothing wrong with using someone else's creation as inspiration of your own. Certainly the advancement of science, art and such wouldn't be where it is without using that which is as a starting point for what will be.
Regardless of the original source, anything you do with that idea will be run through your own creative process and filters, so in the end it will be yours. So keep at it, maybe those royalty checks will start coming.

You and I are of the same mind, Tom.
My philosophy:
"I don't want to be famous; I just want my songs to be famous."
Yep.
We got the same idea.

Todd, just the song as an art form....nothing quite reaches me like a song...and like you said...i don't want to be famous but i would like one of my songs to move people like I have been moved.

That's Cool. I guess we all have a song we wish we had written. If I had known the words, I would have written - The Adventures of PANAMA RED
but that's just me

Forget Boardwalk.
Think Christmas songs.
MUCH better royalties.
