It's a good song, Scott. But, if I may be so bold and play producer for a minute, I think you could use a different singer on this one.
It's not a slight. I use outside singers when I feel that my voice isn't suited for a song ("I'm Pathetic", "You Wrote This Song", and "Happy Days", for instance), and I just think like this very good song would be better served by somebody with a different tone.
But, overall, nice work, sir!

I agree with that. A more stylized vocal would work great for this tune. Good observation, I was never going to be able to put my finger on it myself. On our song Heavenly Bodies, I totally knew to get someone else to do the vocal. I couldn't have made the right sound myself.
Either way, great song Scott - I love Motown.

we already came up with another idea, someone from the past. Not Diana Ross. :)

Seriously Scott. You know a lot of people from IMP who could probably contribute a great vocal, if they and you have the equipment to get it done. I think you do, no?
Doesn't have to be black, but somebody with a tone that's more suitable.
Doesn't even have to be a guy.

Scott, it's definitely not a black/white thing from my perspective. As a writer of several genres of music and someone who sometimes uses different singers for different song styles, there is nothing "wrong" with your vocal but when you describe a song as being Motown it implies a very specialized kind of vocal style. It's an artistic taste thing and not a racial thing or a diss on your voice. I know a singer who sings like Josh Groban and he can sound good on practically any kind of song but in certain genres like punk or country he doesn't sound as appropriate as a singer who specializes in those genres. Writing a great song with a singer other than yourself is just as cool as being both the writer and the singer. It can only broaden your fan base and draw more attention to your other songs where you do sing.

Nothing wrong with the performance, per se. I just don't think it's the right tone, as I said. At least, not the way that I'm hearing it.
But, I'm not your producer and it is your song, so as long as you're happy with it, that is all that matters!
(I have back-and-forths with other folks who hear things differently than I do too. Some of them in my band!)

Nobody said they didn't like your performance, Scott. As you mentioned, it was an attempt to inspire an idea. Different doesn't mean better, it just means different and trying a new concept. I agree with Todd that the songwriter has the last word as to his or her own song. That's the beauty of being an indie artist. You can do whatever you want and if it makes you happy, God bless. I'm pretty stubborn about my own music, so I shouldn't give advice. As a producer, I want to support artists whose music I enjoy.

The vocals would sound great sung by a group. Four or five singers with strong Motown harmonies. That would work nicely for this one.
