musings on the usefulness of youtube videos
so when we started our band we decided to basically set up shop on youtube. It's the one accessible, universal site for music. I believe folks are more likely to click on a youtube link than a link from any music-only site, and I've had no reason to regret relying on it. We have I believe 36 songs now and have made videos for every one of them. All of our band members have contributed to the video making. Our best video maker is pretty obviously Dave our drummer/producer who at times I've referred to as the indie Scorcese because of the energy and inspiration he brings to the task, he digs up public access movies and black and white stuff, we've had some of our videos starred in by the likes of Cary Grant and other iconic actors from the past.
I've made more videos than the others, my own theory is to try to put up images that compliment the music or inform about the music, have also included lyrics at times in some of our more word dominant songs.
Anyway the reason I bring this up is because of a song we have coming down the pike, not our next release but the one after that, hopefully. It's one of my best ever songs and, well, it's very complex. It could probably be classified as progressive rock. I'm not posting this to ask for advice as much as I'm just trying to gather my thoughts here.
Anyway one of our last releases, Wild Tomorrow, I consider to be our best ever. Dave brought a cool astronaut-themed video which imo was pretty great, but in a way, I'm left feeling a mite bothered because the depth of the meaning of that song far exceeds the limited scope of the story in the video. It's like I wonder, when folks hear the song, will they now think of astronauts? which to me is not the proper outcome.
Back to this progressive rock song, I've combed my brain to try to think of a way to approach doing a video for it and I just don't think anyone short of a Spielberg could come up with a video to do it justice. It's deep and philosophical. Would be hard-pressed to find imagery or even psychedelic visuals that would not end up distorting or diminishing the meaning of the song.
For right now I'm thinking we break our streak and release it strictly in audio format.

I like Verity's explanation and suggestion, perfect sense and very good suggestion and idea, that is exactly what came to my mind as well, my brothers new Band MAD SYMPHONY did exactly that, nothing fancy except a weird kinda E T thingie at the start. Everything else was lyrics over a background of various pixs and some moving pictures, I got to preview the new MAD SYMPHONY video a few days ago and it will be released soon, perhaps I may post it here , so yes, exactly what Verity suggested, good idea!
