my attempt at recording my own folk standard
As you know I mostly do rock songs. Had this song sitting around a long time. I hear it as a Peter,Paul and Mary type tune. Would appreciate your comments.

Nice work. Coulda used a bass track.
Now, see, this...
for this I woulda figured out how to download it,
get in on a flashdrive, throw a stand up bass track on it,
and woosh it back to you. Consider that for future reference.
Really nothing bad about this. It just really could have used a bass track.
But it's still great.

I know you would never want me or anyone else to bullshit you so I am going to tell you straight up. Lose the drum machine. Lose it fast. And slow it down a touch. Think 'Michael Row Your Boat Ashore.' Solo guitar and voice only. Then it will be perfect.

It doesn't need a fucking bass! Christ.

Well as her backing band, we'll answer this.
We'd play the drums live, but yeah, we'd do it with a bass.
So we half agree with you, the drums could stand to be live.
Anyway, nevermind all that, it's a very good song,
and let's don't pick it to death. ~JL

It is supposed to be a folk song. Keep it that way. One guitar. One voice. Perfect. The drums killed it from the get go.

Well, okay, we see where you're going with that thought.
Yeah, if you get technical about it,
folk can be just the voices and the acoustic guitar.
Sure it can. Many are. Not all, but many.
Depends on the production and approach to it.
I will argue academically that once you slap any sort of a drum
or percussion element on the bloody thing, it wants a bass too.
I will argue that, 'cause that's how I see it? That's how we see it.
But yeah, you can just go with only acoustic,
and we even agree with you about slowing it down a touch....
so yeah, if you had no drum track or percussion at all really,
if it was only acoustic guitar, then yeah you wouldn't need a bass.
Once you get the beat, it commands the thump-pump of bass too. ~John

Oh, he also, making a point here, don't get bent out of shape....
he mentioned he was thinking "Peter, Paul & Mary" with it,
so that's a vocal harmony element, so the 'one voice' advise,
while maybe right for some things,
like a thing like early Dylan, misses the point of him going to PP&M.

FT wants a folk classic. Adding drums and bass makes it a rock hybrid and kills the folkiness.
AND, it is too fast.

Okay, now it's me,
and let's not turn this into our usual hissy fissy pissy match.
Folk Classic. Is a Big Genre.
"This Land Is Your Land" by The New Christy Minstrels.
Monster Folk Classic. HYUUUGE, Folk Classic.
Remember it? Or, before your time?
'nother one by them, "Green Green" by The New Christy Minstrels,
(One of my all time favorite songs maybe ever, by the way,
since the thing came out in 1963, I wore out two copies of the 45)
also, a big production,
with some sort of drum kit, a stand up bass if I'm not mistaken,
and, like about thirty some-odd people singing it.
It's all how you go about it.
You can go big, like the Minstrels, you can go sparse,
like Dylan's first album, strictly one voice, one acoustic guitar, that's it.
Both are legitimate.
But I'll agree with you about the tempo, it could stand to be slower.
Great song though. Gotta give the man that.

And I agree with ya, ALJ. It is a great song.
And slow it down, FT! Slow it down! :D
[edit] And one more thing...
The reason I said "one guitar, one voice," is because FT is singing solo. I do think his melody would work very well if it was harmonized like a PP&M song.
Looking forward to the next version, FT. make it shine, brothaman!

I wanted to thank you guys for this discussion, much appreciated!
I put the drum down just so I'd keep proper time. Then I left it on for no particular reason but when I played it for a friend last night I think that was her favorite part.
I hear what you're saying about the song being too fast but that's by choice. While I wanted to do a old style folk song I wanted to keep it modern sounding enough so it could go on my next Rubber Soul. Besides as a standard, folks can sing it any way they want at the campfire. :) Larree, I'd love to hear you sing it btw.
I may pull the drums off and see if I like it better. Thanks again my bros.

Alright! Just grabbed the lyrics. I'll learn the chords over the next few days. Start practicing it, perhaps perform it live in Second Life a few times to really make it mine, and record it!Then I'll upload it here and you can hit me with one of those cool banners. Maybe we can earn some site money. Means a lot that you asked me to do that. Boom, brotha.

Hey FT I'm a little late on this I missed the first version.
This is cool and folky the harmonies are nice and that little guitar solo was a great touch.
Best,
