I'll take rock over that GaGa pop slop any day of the week.
Even 70s classic schlock rock is superior to that dumb crap.

Nobody's putting down her performance. The music though is flimsy, weak.

Funny this posted as I was making a similar point on Steve Ison's post. Lady Gaga is a perfect example. No one ever heard of her when she was a singer/songwriter playing clubs in NY. She got famous for being a master entertainer. That's really her talent. I never liked her duet stuff with Tony Bennett, and she did something at an award show from Sound of Music - all Julie Andrews type vocals which I thought was pretty lame as well. But she's excellent at being Lady Gaga - it's great spectacle, and not just anyone can do it. People love a good show that takes them out of the harsh realities for a minute.

I don't own any of her albums and don't really know the songs, but whenever I see her perform on TV she is great. Her duet with Elton John at the Grammys a few years ago was outstanding.
I surely would not call her music "slop"! Her arrangements are crisp and tight, and the music moves nicely through key and tempo changes.

Schlock is probably a better word for it than slop.

I like this song:
I also like a couple of others she has written, and she is actually a very good songwriter and musician, and has an impressive voice.
I just wish she hadn't chosen to market her music by acting like a clown. :( She's basically trying to be the new Madonna, and that sucks, because Madonna sucks (yeah, I know - blasphemy). This woman is a much better singer and musician (let alone - songwriter) than Madonna ever was, so she didn't need to go that route... :/

I like Poker face... my sons band use to do a heavy guitar version... was pretty kule!
A lot of her music is much like club music... just meant to make the kids want to get up and jump around or dance. On the surface you don't get the impression of a whole lot of substance there... maybe in time.
Yeah she can sing though.
I watched the performance... and was entertained for the 10 minutes or so she was on.

I do not own any of her records, GaGa's.
That said, as I take back my cameo day from a runaway ghost....
I think GaGa could rock, if she ever decided to.
As I see it, she's basically made herself into this decade's Madonna.
Come on, am I the only one who sees that?
It's almost like that's what she set out to do.
Which is fine, obviously it pays well.
But yeah, we all have to agree with Scott on this one,
we prefer rock, or rock n roll, to, whatever that is, well made as it is.
I think GaGa is way more talented than the public may ever know.
'Cause she does the thing that's selling.
And John wants me to add,
only this once John, I'm tiring of this (imagine how they all feel too....)
'at the point where you're putting out shit you hate because it sells,
that, is when it's time to fuckin kill yourself'
Okay, now I have to do disclaimer.
Do not kill yourself. I've tried it. If it ain't your time, they shove you back here.
Not worth the bother.
John you used the "F" word, put ten dollars in the swear jar.
"pussy"
Twenty dollars.
Oh and by the way,
thanks for posting a youtube thingy
of Pete Seeger doing This Land Is Your Land.
I got to perform that very song, with Pete Seeger,
back a million years ago,
before many of you were even born, remember?
Rock may need to be reimagined, reinvented,
certainly looked at as 'what can you do with it'
more than 'what has been done with it'.

Ha!
Okay. I see that I am not the only one that occurred to.
The bit about Madonna. And I agree, GaGa is more talented than Madonna.
But they were both selling cheese to mice. Nom nom nom nom.
So to speak.
Dear Lord, Hear My Prayer,
let me, or friggin' let somebody,
come up with Rock N Roll that takes over the charts again. PLEEEEASE!

I think Gaga is an outstanding vocalist and a gifted artist. Her show at halftime in the Superbowl was quite entertaining. I like her more current pop stuff more than the Tony Bennett gigs she was doing. I heard she also has a country album coming out. Whatever, I am not interested in hearing that. The girl gets around though doesn't she? She has great management. I like versatile artists who do more than just stand and sing. She does choreography, sings and plays instruments. She has certainly figured out a way to monetize her talents. I admire that!

Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta aka Lady Gaga is a killer artist performer musician entertain actress and producers, let's not diminish her accomplishments and how she got there. Gaga rocks , maybe do some investigation why she is so good, so versatile so intelligent so capable. She is a multi - faceted artist who capable of doing any kind of music, anything.

I wouldn't call her songs rock at all. I also performed in high school musicals with numerous young ladies who could sing as good or better than GaGa.
You know, every year it's the same thing with the Super Bowl halftime. It happens, it's the same bloviated circus show and it becomes somehow politically incorrect to not like it. You're almost considered unAmerican if you don't approve or something.

It is not always the best singers , players who make it in this industry, it is the ones who are more determined, have incredible drive and desire and are in it for the long haul. must have perseverance, work your ass off, do the best you can. as for the rest who try, and fail, well they fall like wilted flowers, along with their good singing and playing, that shit dont matter. the wreckage along the highway to success is devastating.
Carve out your own way, burn out a path, be a trail blazer. And that is what Lady Gaga is, self made as all the Icons in the music industry. and remember, relationships along the way are helpful too. there are many an asshole who dont know dick about relationships and how to build, maintain and nurture those important aspects to success in one of the toughest callings in this world, those relationships can pave the way to success or at least assist in one getting to the top in any kind of vocation. Ever look into what Lady Gaga did to get to where she is, she deserves the accolades

Well she is very determined, and I don't begrudge her her success.
Still I think these are 2 separate subjects, her career success and the quality of her music. Is there literally anyone they could throw out there at halftime of the Super Bowl where folks would have issue at this point? Course when they had rock stars people bitched because they were too old.

well FT, like Francesca said the other day to me, and i have to concur with her, " it is a matter of personal taste" and there you have it, you may not like it, or what she does, so lets face it, what we liked or thought or think something is good and we go gaga lol over it the music of oour time, and think to ourselves it is and was great , but we identified with it and embraced it, well it was a reflection of music of our time, that is what music is in its various forms. It reflects societal mores and circumstances and what is happening at that time .
So in this case I disagree with you on the point of her music not measuring up, it does, for those living in the moment at this time for the many who embrace what she does and the many others, you may not like it, but that does not mean it does not possess a musicality and quality. To me, I go, wow, that women can lay it down, just like Taylor Swift, these are powerful human beings and they have tapped into something special dynamic and the youth identify with it, as you did when you were younger.
So I end with, as Francesca so clearly stated " it's a matter of personal taste"

I wonder about the societal lust for peroxide blonde mini-skirted (or meat skirt) troboudours i.e. Britney spears, Christine Aguillera, Gwen Stefani, Madonna, now Lady GaGa...gotta admit her moniker's got class = 'goin' crazy over' in francais.
She's a Lady...so of course, she becomes a "jester" as she herself admits...majorin' in outrageous...
A noted feminist commentator calls her "an identity thief..."

so, not only lots tweeting and posting elsewhere, many discovering her music and making her even richer. maybe send a note to her and see if she would like to donate something here to help us out...

Steve, I don;t wonder about that as we all know that the Blonde White woman has always been put on a special pedestal. It is the way America works. They decided many years ago that the Blonde White woman is superior in talent looks and desirability. Not my choice at all. I prefer bbw brunettes of color. Go figure! Most of the Blonde performers are not even really blondes. They just color their hair and reap the benefit of America's preferred example of beauty. It sucks but thats they way it is. Like I tell my kids and grands kids all the time. "If you are expecting a fair shot at anything in this world you are crazy. You already have one strike against you just for being born Black." Life is not fair, the music industry has never been fair. People that don't deserve to succeed succeed all the time. While people who really deserve it get left behind just because of their looks, ethnicity, size etc. The talent less are have been making great gains for at least 50 years. that is because a prejudiced public continues to support these fuckers. There is good music from great artists out there. Its just that you have to find it now days. The DJ's and music industry have bought into the concept of promoting talent that is lacking. It's not fair or right but life has never been fair or right. At least that has been my experience and I make sure that my folks know what to expect. You can be great and nobody will notice you because they are too busy watching the blonde girl who has no talent.
