The MonaLisa Twins raise their game even further with totally new swingin' 3D Single!!
ok now I'm a pretty big fan of the MLT, from the first time I heard them, and I'm not the only one, they're without a doubt the most popular indie band I've ever seen. I was so excited about them that I went above and beyond what I've ever done except on maybe 1 other occasion in order to bring them to indiemusicpeople.com. So I was very excited to hear that they had a record of new material coming because this is the sort of time when bands make huge leaps forward, and I didn't have much doubt about these ladies being able to do this. So I heard they had a new song out, all I knew about it was that I saw one of my friends saying he didn't like it that much. Well I got the newsletter today with a link to the video so I just listened for the first time to Waiting For The Waiter. First reaction, holy shit, they got swing. Love that lazy kind of sound, was surprised this is what they're debuting first for the new record. Then the hooks really started to sink in. Do their diehard fans even know what this song is about? I do. It's about the fact that they're a phenomenon and they know it, and they're waiting for the money, waiting for the reality of the success they've already earned (*And I have paid my bill*) that is going to change their life. There's even a Beatlemania reference which knocked me out, this song has major double meanings going on. and combined with the musical hook, it's really the perfect single, even has the alliteration Waiting for the Waiter that reminds of Please Please Me.
*I can see you running*
I always said this was the indie version of Beatlemania. They know who they are. They know what should be happening to them. We see them signing their CDs
*You seem so busy trying to satisfy your clientele
But the change ain’t coming*
They're wanting to be put in the same ballpark as their heroes..
*We should leave and move uphill to the mountain range*
More Beatlemania allusions, even equating themselves with their fabs.
*I remember your face
I could swear that I have met you somewhere
In a different place*
I absolutely love this kind of music, I call lyrics like this 3D, because it sounds like they're singing about one thing, but they're really singing about something else. and as their fan, if we listen close enough, we get to be in on the secret.
They include an appearance by John Sebastian because you know, they believe in magic. :)

Enjoyed the song,
they are indeed at a crossroads, the world's way is what it is,
hope they achieve what they are after,
'you consider me your young apprentice
caught between the sewer and the palace
hypnotized by you if I should linger
staring at the ring around your finger...'
(paraphrasing a Sting song)
Will they wrap Mephistopholes around their finger?
the music biz is often a cruel place lol.
'love what you do and do what you love'.

Hey Scott; last year at this time I would have been all over this, but I have been in a Whitherward WhitherWorld Whirlpool lately. I was one of the very first people to pre-order ORANGE at 8 minutes after the midnight release. We were supposed to receive our copies on or around Friday, the 29th, but I got mine on Monday, the 25th. My MLT FB buddies were still waiting. Maybe Michaela sent my copy ASAP because she knew I would e-mail them ASAP?
I actually did not want Orange that early as Ashley and Edward would be here the 27 and 28 and i really had little time. But what? Was I not going to listen to Orange right away? NO WAY!
Itso pointed out your IFC analysis of WFTW (I can still read there even though I left the group. Your insights are GREAT and have helped me to appreciate WFTF much more and it is growing on me. But it is still the least fave of Itso and me. I sent the e-mail to Mona and Lisa directly and asked them to look at your analysis to see if what that was what they intended. If they reply, I'll let you know. I think you are SPOT ON, buddy!
My early faves are tracks #2 and #12. LOVE THE UNEXPECTED PIANO! especially the honky-tonk on track 3. I wonder if that is their papa Rudi? The whole album is great and I love it. I gave my copy to Ashley and in turn got an autographed copy of "The Anchor" to mail to Mona and Lisa. Hate to compare and play favorites, but for me "The Anchor" edges out "Orange" but by the slimmest of margins. But that is comparing APPLES (of my eye, Ed and Ash and especially her of course and the ORANGE twins Mona and Lisa.
Two more things: Did you realize that after the lyrics video you posted, their new regular video of WFTW appears? Besides the blues harp he plays, John Sebastian makes a cameo in the video. Man alive, we all look so different when we age and get into our 60's and then push 70's. That is where most all the heroes of my youth are and some are hitting 80 as well!
The second thing is if you can sometime teach me how to post videos and photos here. I have several photos taken either by Ashley or with her camera, here in Omaha. I will try to assemble them in one e-mail and send them to you. Or maybe Ashley or Edward or Evie could put them in the Pipeline.
INDIES ROCK buddy I appreciate that more than ever now. Hey, you will be as busy as Supergirl with the GK's coming up. I can wait to expand my station adding until that event is over. WWMM Michael - I want to replace MLT2 Michael with that. So busy!!!

well you gotta remember, artists generally when they're creatively lyrically don't want to disclose exactly what they mean. I know even I have songs that I won't talk about the meaning even though I'm usually upfront about most things.

Yeah, that was what I thought too - they probably won't want to tell what exactly they mean; that's part of the charm of intentionally ambiguous lyrics like these... :)
BTW, my early favorite from the album is track #5 - "It's Alright". It's the catchiest of all 11 songs, so whoever knows my music tastes shouldn't be surprised by my choice there... Unfortunately, it seems to already be quite underrated (just like the title track of the debut album was), since many MLT fans have listed their early favorites from "Orange" and no one has mentioned "It's Alright" among them. :( Oh well... It might be because they consider it "lyrically simple" and/or "less serious and mature" than the overall tone of the album. I myself don't care about those things at all - I only care how much I enjoy listening to a certain song, and (for now) this is the one I enjoy the most from the album...
Here is an excerpt about the song, from a review of the album, posted on Facebook by a MLT fan named Richard Knights, and I agree 100% with what he said about it (when the song gets uploaded to IMP one day, and I add it to my station, I'll probably quote this in my blurb, as I couldn't possibly write a better description of it than Mr Knights):
"A harmonic gem, as the girls' voices swirl around each other in bold, beautiful patterns. Musically, though light and airy, it is complex and varied. A wonderful chance to catch the twins' harmonies at their finest." - Those are the kind of songs I like, so what he said there is exactly why I love the song so much already! :)
Of course, Mike here will probably say that I only like the song because Mona and Lisa seem to be singing about me - "Itso right, Itso right, Itso OK"... :P LOL Nah.
