Rock and roll is unfair
So I was out at a club last night, and they had a dj. Listened to a bunch of songs, maybe 2 of which I liked (they played a lot of Beastie Boys which I don't) and it occurred to me, it's so wrong that I'm never gonna hear any of my band's songs in a place like this. It's an impossibility. Can't even make one of our youtubes go viral even though the last couple songs at least are worthy of that. Sometimes the world seems so unfair.

yup, but keep kicking out your vibe Scott, churning them out and stay the course and perhaps sometime you might find that magic hook that someone will hear and go, that's really good. And that someone just might be out there listening right now, you never know. Keep writing, recording, working your chops. I believe, someone might like something I do sometime, has not happened yet, just small tiny little wins, and thats it, I may never get anything from all my songs I done, the fact is, you do good lyrics and music, me, just instrumentals, so right there you have an advantage
keep believing, it will happen, I am sure of it

Now I admit that at one time I had it way worse than even you! I had bands in negotiations for record deals from about age 16 on. But I finally kicked it like a bad drug. Like coke or heroin. Entitlement. Music is much more fun without it. And if good things happen, great! But I will never jones for that shit again.

I think my band's music is pretty great, too.
I think that I'm a pretty good songwriter and have become a pretty good producer.
BUT... it ain't gonna happen for everyone. And it's natural to be envious for folks that it did happen for. I am too.
Even if I don't like it, I have to acknowledge the talent there -- it's just different from mine.
A friend of mine played bass on a couple of Rhianna's records. I don't like Rhianna. But the woman can sing. And my buddy, I know from playing with him, is a MOTHER FUCKER on the bass!
Just because you're jealous (we all are), don't poo-poo the talents of others. If you ever played WITH them, I think they would surprise you.
No saying you have to like them, though.
And maybe, one day, you will get lucky like they did.

Exactly, Todd. And you're great; FT's great; Stoneman is great; this website is oozing talent. But I think it's safe to say that when you don't expect great things to happen - great things happen!

I have to agree with that, but it's not just the music biz, it's bleedin' everything... the corp world,
reminiscing now, the best buzz I've had from music was playing in bands, not online or virtual, but real pubs and clubs...,
but now I'm old and cynical, and I am no longer in any bands,
I'm out of touch now with the local gig scene, I don't know if the aspiring acts get paid.
I imagine it's probably along the lines of "one beer per head through the door", or "battle of the bands shit contests",
That's the way it was heading the last time I was gigging, and in fact the last gig I played to a real crowd was ten years ago, and there was no money involved. It was a "favor for a mate".
I don't really like the pubs and clubs vibe anymore, I cant drink due to medical reasons, and find the atmosphere rather stiflingly oppressive, noisy loud drunks spilling beer and sticking elbows in my ribs, dancing away to chart drivel, and the dj gets paid cash, even the bouncers get at least minimum wage.
Teenagers wearing Ramones t-shirts who have never even heard tracks like Sheena Is A Punk Rocker,
Still, this is just the modern world.... you just have to keep doing what you do,
At least you're a legend here FT :)
