The 2015 Golden Kayak Awards are here! Please read, everybody..

ok the first thing you need to know about the 2015 Golden Kayak Awards is we're basically doing it identically to how we did it before.

The only difference is, because we've only had a half year where a lot of songs were being uploaded, we're trimming a few of the genres by combining ones that didn't have a lot of songs.

Eligibility - Anyone who was a member up to the time of this post can send one nomination email and one vote email. If you have multiple pages you can still only send one of each. Please use the email listed as your contact email to send so we can verify. We're also sending a bulk email out on this with basically the same info contained in this post.

Songs eligible are those that were uploaded between 11-1-14 and 11-30-15. You can tell if a song is eligible by going to that song's songpage and to the right it will say when the song was created on the site. Please do not nominate songs that are outside the 13 month eligibility period.

Anyway you can nominate one item in each of 25 categories, Cut and paste this and put your member name at the top so we can easily check eligibility. In combined categories like Ambient and Classical, you can nominate one song for either category but not both. You can leave some of the categories blank if you want in your nominations email.

Genres used must be genres that artist chose. If you see an odd genre, hold cursor over that and you'll see the main genre you're working with.

You can't nominate yourself and I'm ineligible as well. We ask that you don't fill your nominations with a list of your friends but rather let quality of song be the criteria.

Send your nominations email to goldenkayaks2015@gmail.com, they must be in by 12 AM PST 12-29-15.

When nominations are all in (by Dec 29nd), a ballot will be created, probably by 1-1-16. Musicologists team will help with this as there will be many songs with just one nomination. Each category on the ballot will have 4 to 7 songs in it. Then you will have 2 weeks to vote for whoever.

Simultaneously, there will be a Kayak song of the Year voting, a poll on the front page, between the 8 songs that have been #1 on Kayak Big 25 since site relaunch.

Any weird shit like artists changing genres in the middle or ballots we can't verify and so on will be thrown out of the competition.

If there is a final tie in the voting (on final ballot), there's no tie-breaker, both or all 3 songs will get the Kayak.

When competition is done there will be an awards radio show to announce the winners which will also be provided to our affiliate stations. There are no prizes except for a banner on your page and a permanent listing on the Golden Kayak Wall of Fame. http://indiemusicpeople.com/GoldenKayakWallofFame.html The results and radio show will deliver a substantial amount of exposure to the winners. The tentative date for the awards show is January 10th but that is subject to change.

This is great news. I am excited to review and re listen to the many great songs and artists over the next while to solidify my choices, but do know some idea on a few. This is a challenging job to pick from so many amazing and talented artists and bands

Great news for the site and artists and hope people really respond and embrace this whole undertaking

I think the fact that only members can vote is quite limiting and as the actual voting process is way too long winded people are just going to vote for themselves and that's it. It would have been much easier if it was done as a survey (using surveymonkey or a similar site) and was open to everyone so fans of the nominees could actually vote, and not just people who happen to be members of indie music people (which isn't really a lot at all).

I am not affiliated with IMP, I am just a member. With that said, understand I have nothing to gain or lose by responding to your critique.
The Golden Kayak (as I perceive it) is a small scale Grammy-type award, only much more liberal. - Not just anyone can vote for Grammys.
As a member of IMP, you are not allowed to nominate yourself, and it is discouraged to favor your homies in the nomination process, which would be quite obvious if it happened.
This system may have it's flaws, but those flaws end up being a burden on admin, and the integrity of the nominating and voting process would be compromised if it was open to ambitious indies spamming the planet to get all their FB posse to nominate/vote them up. To complain about a simple copy paste and email seems rather lazy to me.
I can tell you from experience it is very gratifying to to take the time to construct your nomination ballot and submit it, and it is not much work considering the workload admin take on sorting it all out for absolutely nothing to gain monetarily.

Consider it an elite privilege to be a part of a process that is actually pretty damn cool given the relative nature.

Also, to imply that all nominees will only vote for themselves kind of says something about your own motivation... - or not, I am certainly not saying that is your motivation, I'm just sayin.

Welcome to the pipeline, shalala vines, and congrats on being nominated in 2 categories. In my opinion it's much more prestigious to win a Golden Kayak nominated and voted on by your peers than to get involved in and win a social networking clickfest.

We're building a culture here. The more you get involved in indie music, the more you get out of it. We recommend that everyone try to be an indie music person, it's where you find the best music of this era. Hit-and-run visitors hover on the outskirts of town, it's a lonelier place, there's nowhere to belong, dreams are more elusive.

This whole process has been a joy and wonderful opportunity, I got to nominate musicians and artists I have listened to for years up to probably a decade or more and of course some are newer in the last number of months last few years and so on.We got to pick the best songs in the past year, and each and every artist is deserving to be on the ballot, nominated by their peers, That is the beauty of it all, we as members get to participate, and that is so cool.

I find the whole thing here in this nomination process really engaging, because one has to now vote for whom they think, in their opinion is best in their category, since I listen to a lot of music around I M P I think I have a pretty good idea who are worthy, then again some will have a different take. that is the thing, we all have different tastes and takes , it is so subjective and we all respect each others work, we all do the best we can with the tools and abilities we have. Yet it is a tight knit community and one which has a high level of insight and understanding of the music appreciation end of it as well as some of us actually being in the music business as players and promoters, so I think we know what we are doing..

I and many others have taken care and consideration throughout the whole process in the nomination part of it, and now we move forward into the actual end game. It lets face it, we are all winners here because it is all about you, your songs, your development as entertainers, artists and musicians.so lets embrace the opportunity and as Scott and Jilly and others have stated. just enjoy. I do
