Haters Still Win
To whom it may concern. Earlier today, I've been mad all day because they keep talking behind me, being jealous, being frustrated, making dirty excuses, doing dirty deeds. They say that I'll never amount to anything. They say I was nothing. They hating on me for real. But I tried to block and ignore them, but it didn't work.

We all face our slings and arrows, it's not about what comes your way, as it will, and holds true for everyone. It's about how you handle it when it does. Keep the high road, and ignore the naysayers.

One of the things I teach my students that I vocal coach is that they have to develop thick skin if they want to be in the music industry. Everybody is a critic and it hurts a lot if you let it. I tell them to ignore the bullshit and look for the golden nuggets in the critique. The golden nuggets are the things that may be true that you can correct. Things like pitchy singing and poor sound quality can all be corrected. It takes work but it can be corrected. Early on there were some very big time A&R folks who zinged my demos so badly that I wanted to cry. But reading their critiques over and over again gave me a clue about the things I could improve on. It was hard to accept that I could improve but thank God I accepted it because now those same people are all singing my praises. Why? Because the shit they said made me get my game up better. It made me work harder, practice longer and study my craft intensely. One thing you don't want (for sure) is to be surrounded by a bunch of "yes people" who constantly praise you but never tell you the truth about something you are doing. I would rather someone tell me how bad I sound in private than to get out in public sounding bad and get booed. Sometimes the haters are doing you a favor. There was something they heard that they didn't like. Find out what it is and then decide if it needs to be fixed or if they are just full of shit. I have one partner that I call when I want the honest truth about something, He will not hesitate to not only tell me I suck but also tell me what I suck at and why. It just so happens that I thoroughly trust his opinion as he is a workd renowned artist and has worked with many of the best in the industry. At first I thought he was a hater but then I realized that there was some truth in his hate and I needed to fix it. The world is full of opinions. Everybody has one. It is up to you to decide which opinions you trust. No matter what, you must believe in yourself and grow some thick skin about it. Blessings, Stoneman

So true, Stoneman. I always take advantage of the good, constructive criticism and ignore the rest. My music partner Russ gave me one of the best compliments ever. He said he hardly ever needs to use auto-tune on my voice because I am not pitchy. So I just keep that in my head when people try to diss me.

Such true words...Work on one's music, and if this is a passion, and you live it, and you love it, a person improves, and follows the music to a better place, ain't necessarily rainbow and candy hearts, but in touch with the "ancient, heavenly connections," anyway...imhv...
