Bruce Springsteen song, very poetic, ramblin' visionary storytellin' w a ragged edge...
is this awfully dated now?

Bruce's voice does sound really young, I gotta say - so yeah, maybe sort of dated ...

Well, I kinda agree, Dolores.
Production-wise, there's not all that many bells and whistles.
I find the mix tasteful overall, though the drums sound alittle off, in places lol...the organ and piano's grand, overall. Where's the bass? lol..
Having said that, Bruce's sound evolved, and didn't hit "the big time" until "Born to Run," where the production's totally amped up, and an impressive wall of sound. I remember hearin' how Bruce "hated" the new production initially, but he got used to it I guess, and it's served him well.
What i love about this is the storytellin', no one tells a story like Bruce.
All the chelsea suicides and there are many, are commemorated in this song, touches on the numinous ghostly auras, among us, and there's stuff about relationships that are like fine wine, uncasked for the first time, in my humble view.
Yeah, kinda ramblin' in places, but authentic sounding to humble moi.
I have a feelin' this is to Patti, in their younger years, ended up marrying her oh so many years later, if i recall. She's there at many of his concerts, bein' a back up singer.
Viva Bruce...

The production is what it is, and I totally agree about the bass player that is actually playing fabulous stuff but so far back in the mix, it's too bad. But I see that I missed the main point of your post which was about the meaning of the song. I guess I honestly have a hard time relating to the stories that a lot of the iconic and well loved artists tell. Do I feel alienated or what haha ....
But now that I read your analysis, I kind of do find the song to be sort of dated in one way. People, in my experience, which admittedly has been sort of skewed to the weird, don't react to each other and their relationships this way that much anymore. I think things have gotten way more cynical than when these words were written.
But from stuff you've said about your past experiences, you've had way more personal experience with people in the music business and some before they were stars than I ever did. So thanks for the perspective. I'll listen again with a different ear.

Well i very rarely listen to lyrics in songs - and this is the first time i've heard this track..
I get into lyrics if they're an obvious focus -or i love the song musically enough to want to pay attention..
I like this instantly straight away tho 'cos its got an obvious urgency, presence n beauty in delivery and natural musical flow - and the 'I came for you,for you' bit is so obviously heartfelt n true..
Its hugely Dylan influenced in musical style n delivery but has an individual spirit, energy n vitality which makes it authentic n not parody..
Production bells n whistles are always totally secondary to me - and this is a cool heartfelt joyful song so (to my way of thinking ) could never be 'dated'...
Just like joy, beauty, magic.love can never be dated..
For me things like 'Hair Metal',80s synth pop (and 80s 'synth' film music) n Freddie And The Dreamers sound dated basically-'cos they were always rubbish in the 1st place..
Alot of the music of today like Modern Country Pop,Gangster Rap n Corporate cod-soulin' hyper-earnest 'new folk' like Mumford And Son n Ed Sheeran will date very badly i feel
If musics got an inner grace, honesty n beauty its got something that'll never date
The passing trifles of fashion are always there for those who like to live on the surface of life..The $$$ eyed musical-marketing opportunists, the passive sleepin' music consumers who get blown hither an thither by the cynical stink-breath of their corporate overlords
Those with more about them crave music with some genuine soul n creativity that speaks to their inner world..
Who'd say Strange Fruit' By Billie Holiday or 'A Day In The Life' by THe Beatles sounds dated ?
