A Novel about a Musician in a Major Car Accident...
Detour (a novel) Review—from Lithuania
"The novel Detour is a broad, American look at the lives of two twentysomethings, Richard and Kimberly. Also, deals with the medical profession, and also includes memorable characters, and atmospheric, evocative writing, and vivid imagery, a la perhaps Tom Wolfe. About a young man in a major car accident, who’s on his road to recovery, thanks in large part to a dedicated girl friend, who’s starting nursing school. Also, his girl friend’s father, a doctor, takes him under their wing. Along the way, while he’s injured, and wounds healing, he develops his music, and though he’s a foster child, with a tough upbringing, and lack of roots, he’s also a brilliant musician and student of literature. He’s got a friend who’s a film arts guy, who videos him performing his songs at a party, puts this on youtube, and receives millions of hits. Kimberly’s a strong, gritty female character. Also, there’s an African American studio producer Leroi, who’s Richard’s friend, and encourager. A road to recovery, with twists and turns...with suspicions about his surgeon, who had alcohol on his breath, the night he was brought into the emergency room. So he hires a private detective. Suffice it to say, there are startling revelations..."
